What's Happening in 2008

Things are already starting to take shape for 2008. You will see quite a few changes next year as we are also incorporating the new Ironman Muskoka 70.3.

Number 1 on our agenda this coming year is the environment. How can we as athletes and race directors lessen our carbon footprint at the events? We have a few ideas up our sleeve but if you can think of any more than please feel free to contact us.
  1. We will do our best to limit the pre race pamphlets that go into the athletes race bags. Instead, we will be offering on-line promotions through e-mails and our website. Check your race emails and the website for special offers this way, those interested in a certain promotion can then print off what they want therefore lessening the impact on the landfill. This will not always be possible but we will do our best to keep to our new policy.
  2. Recycling Bins at the races. We have numerous races where recycling already takes place- I have to admit though that while many of you are very conscious of the bins around you there are still many who disregard them. We often see people placing recyclable materials in the garbage and garbage in the recycling bins or overflow an already full gargage can when 5 feet away is an empty one. There are however, a few races where  we have trouble co-ordinating enough recycling bins on race day. Here's where you may be able to help. If you are a member of the community of either Kitchener (Victoria's) , Grimsby (Niagara), Muskoka, or Peterborough then we would love you to help us out. If you can organize with the city to bring out the cans to the site and also arrange for pick up then we will in turn, give you free entry into that race. Most communities offer this service for free and therefore the program just requires the manpower to make it happen. If you would like to be our local environment co-ordinator for any of the above races then please contact us at info@trisportcanada.com .
  3. You will also notice that the Pre-Season Application booklet due to come out in Feb/ Mar will be smaller with less advertising. We asked your opinion in the on-line survey and many of you still would like some information to have and hold in your hands while many of you would rather go to the interenet to check on race information. We feel that for this year, this is a good compromise. We will evaluate again at the end of the season.
  4. Littering at any race (outside aid stations) is an automatic DQ. If you notice an athlete littering while on course we ask that you remember their race # and report to us once the race is over. We always have to remember that we are guests in the communities we race in.
  5. Post Race Food - due to Health and Safety Guidelines the food we offer at races has to be pre-packaged. Pre-packaged foods eliminates the need for food prep and on site contamination. Without refrigeration on site, it is also in your best interest and therfore packaging is a neccessary evil. After you finish your food you can please be mindful of the appropriate bins or feel free to use your food bag to keep your recyclables in it and then continue your recycling efforts at home.
We can all try to do our best. It WILL take a combined effort to help lessen our impact on race communities but every little bit helps! We thank you in advance!

What's Happening With The Race Schedule?

One of the first things you will notice (2008 schedule of events listed below) is that we will have to say good-bye to a few races.

1- Belwood Lake will now be replaced with Owen Sound. We will have an Olympic distance triathlon and duathlon , a sprint tri and du and KOS duathlon. The feedback after the Owen Sound race weekend was so positive that we had to keep it in the line-up for 08. Owen Sound will fit nicely into the schedule here.

2- We also will have to say goodbye to Niagara on the Lake Duathlon for 2008. Scheduling conflicts have occurred and another user group has acquired the race weekend for 2008. We fully anticipate being back to NOTL in 2009 and are already working with the town to make that happen.

3- Ironman Qualifying Spots will once again be up for grabs at the Muskoka Chase. We will have 40 Ironman Canada, 20 Ironman Lake Placid and 20 Ironman Florida spots. Registration for this race will open at the beginning of January.

4- Express Card holders (OTS) now includes the cost of Peterborough Half Ironman. In previous years there was a $40 extra charge for those wanting to compete in the Half. An express card entitles you to race all year long for one low cost. No more late fees! Full details can be found here.

5- Due to the popularity of the adidas technical shirt upgrade we have arranged to make them available to you again. This year, both men and women will have a choice of a cardinal red shirt or white. We also will have a limited supply of black. Those who purchase these upgrades ($25 tx included) will also receive the 100% cotton tee. The cotton tee will have full individual race artwork. The adidas shirt will boast the Subaru Triathlon Series full colour artwork.

6- On-line registration for the Subaru Triathlon Series will begin in January 08. With the anticipation of the Ironman Muskoka 70.3, we expect the demand for the Subaru Muskoka Chase in June and the Peterborough Half Ironman will be huge. Last year the Muskoka Chase sold out - so please hurry and get your registrations in early.

7- Subaru Series Gift Certificates! Back by popular demand. Not only for Christmas but at any time of the year. Choose your dollar amount! To purchase yours please e-mail us at info@trisportcanada.com  or call us at 905-562-6670 and we will help you with the arrangements.

8- Hotel accommodation is always tricky at certain races as rooms tend to fill up quickly. We have streamlined the process for you in order to make it "easier'. Each race page will now have a special link that will take you to a list of hotels, with photos and prices all on one page for that particicular race. Since Muskoka, Peterborough and Owen Sound are starting to fill up already here are the links to help get you started on your 2008 planning.

Peterborough Hotels

Owen Sound Hotels

The 2008 season is still a "work in progress". We find that many of our ideas and plans never fully come into fruition until early spring. No worries- we will keep you up to date with the occassional
e-mail in order to help keep you informed

Family, Friends and Fitness
Fun Runs

NEW for 2008. In order to help increase participation and the health of our families, all fun runs for 2008 will be free to participating runners. We hope this encourages all ages of athletes including children, teens, parents and grandparents. It is our hope to get everyone up and moving and having some fun. There's no need to sign up for the event. If you are there and want to join in then please be our guest! We will fill you in with more detail as the season progresses.
