Chaverware March 2010 newsletter
Greetings!
It's amazing how quickly time passes. It was just yesterday that I was wishing you a Happy Purim, and now Spring is here and we are preparing for Passover. Passover and Spring celebrate new beginnings. Here at Chaverware we too are celebrating a new beginning, with the rollout of our new website. Please visit www.Chaverware.com and let us know what you think. It's been in the works for a LONG time and we are very proud of the result. Over the next few months we will be enhancing the funcionality of the site with specific "Customer Only" pages that makes the site useful to both our existing customers as well as those organizations not yet part of our family.
Wishing you and your families a Chag Kasher v'Sameach, a Happy and Kosher Passover,
Rob and the entire Chaverware team

Pause for a moment, switch over to Chaverware, click on Help/About Chaverware. Note the version that you are running and then come back here. If you are still running Chaverware 4 and you are not on Chaverware 4.14, then you should click on Tools and Check for updates. That will bring you to 4.14, the last release of Chaverware 4.
Now, ask yourself the question, "why am I not using Chaverware 5"? I would be happy to discuss that with you and help you make plans for upgrading to Chaverware 5. In the meantime, look at the hardware requirements for Chaverware 5 and see if your computers are up to snuff.
For those of you already on Chaverware 5, if you are not running 5.1.29, click on Tools and Check for updates. This will bring you up to the latest release. (Depending on where you are starting from, it might take a few iterations to get there. Once the update is complete, check until you are told there are no more updates.) |
Giving Gifts of Property to Charity
This is a topic that comes up often. How do we handle this from a tax point of view? How should we enter it into Chaverware? Our last bookkeeper did it THIS way or THAT way.
Our partners at Kesef Accounting Services, John Grippo and Dave Beyth have significant experience with all of these issues. In discussing this with them, they have provided us with some guidance that we would like to share with you. Click here to read more. |
Balancing the Budget? Increase the Annual Fund
brought to you by David Mersky
David A. Mersky is the Founder and Managing Director of Mersky, Jaffe & Associates, a consulting firm that works with congregations and other nonprofits to provide financial and human resource development solutions. www.merskyjaffe.com
When you and I create our personal budget, there may be a shortfall between what we need and what we currently earn.
This happens in synagogues as well.
However, many synagogues handle this differently than we might as individuals - by cutting expenses or finding additional income streams. For example, I was recently talking to a client congregation who said the Executive Director, when creating the budget for the Finance Committee's review, simply increased the amount the annual fund would raise to cover any projected shortfall. Now, in this congregation, the annual fund encompasses events' revenue and the High Holy Day appeal.
But, in your congregation, could you increase your donations by 20% in this economy?
Yes, you can, but it won't happen unless you make a change in your current course of action.
