2009-2010 Day of Caring Recap

DOCo1The United Way of the Inland Valleys has a very large area of responsibility. So, when we have our annual Day of Caring it is a tremendous undertaking. This year for example we conducted our Day of Caring in five regions of Western Riverside County. Each of these five events was run independently but on the same day at the same time. In this article we have included reports from all of the five areas including dozens of pictures of our fabulous volunteers out doing projects.

A recap of the day; we had nearly 2000 volunteers accomplish 105 projects within our service area. Here are the Regional Reports as submitted by the individual regions:

Perris Day of Caring -125 community volunteers participated in a community-wide United Way Day of Caring on Saturday, Sept. 19 to celebrate volunteerism and community service. "I am very proud of our community members who showed they care at this year's Day of Caring," said Perris Day of Caring Chair, Gael Scott...>>Read more about Perris Day of Caring...

The City of Moreno Valley committee members Kandace Baptiste and Mel Alonzo directed volunteers at one of the shelters. >>Read More...

Pass Region Day of Caring was a huge success!  Our major sponsor was the Bank of Hemet who donated sponsorship dollars for the event and provided the venue.  Under the direction of Linda Hanley and a terrific committee, over 100 community volunteers came out to help with projects for member agencies and other non-profit organizations. >>Read More...

Our Southwest Region is comprised of several communities including Temecula, Murrieta, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore and Canyon Lake. In our Southwest Region we had over 650 volunteers come out for our third annual Day of Caring. Their efforts resulted in the completion of 29 projects throughout the region. It was a fabulous day. The staging area for southwest region was Murrieta's new Town Square. It was the perfect launch site for a near perfect Day. >>Read More... SWdoc

Riverside Day of Caring event was held downtown in the breezeway area of the City of Riverside Building between 9th and 10th streets.  Councilman Andy Melendrez was Riverside Region's Day of Caring Chair this year, directing the day's event.  Our hard working committee members and the councilman had been planning this successful event for months.  Sheree Jenkins from the City of Riverside, Belinda Jones, Volunteer Center, Tijana Quilici, KRCB, Linda Fonze and Ralph Nunez, Parks & Recreations, Bob Rivers, Public Works, Pat Groeneveld, County of Riverside, Loretta Jackson and Lan Bishop, UWIV were the core committee members who along with Linda Newman  put the event together and ran it smoothly throughout the day. >>Read More...

A Hand Up
Roger is a father of three. He has been struggling to keep his family in their apartment. In December, he lost his job, but his wife was still able to work a full 40 hours. A couple months later, Roger's wife's hours were cut to just 25 hours a week. Roger had been looking for work, but had been unsuccessful. He decided to take a course in welding to make him more employable. Once he finishes the course, Roger will be able to support his family once again, but he needed help immediately to keep his family in their home. With donations from the United Way's WIN Campaign (We're In Need), the Salvation Army was able to pay for one month's rent. Roger was so excited and thankful. Roger called soon after I told him that we would be able to assist him with his rent, and said that soon his wife will be able to work a full 40 hours again. He said The Salvation Army was a huge blessing for his family.  A hand up...not a hand out...that's how we LIVE UNITED!

Day of Caring Testimonial
On behalf of Family Service Association, I would like to thank the United Way for their Day of Caring in September at our Riverside County locations. I just had the opportunity to visit a Child Development Center of ours off Hemlock in Moreno Valley, and I have to tell you what a world of difference your volunteers have made! The Moreno Valley Lowes store donated supplies to paint 50 cubby cases for the children's belongings. Now the parents and staff feel like someone actually cared about their children, and took time out of their day to help make their center look beautiful. Please know that your contributions not only enhanced the appearance of the center, but also built confidence in the children and staff of FSA.

Family Service Association thanks the United Way of the Inland Valleys for their continued community support of Family Service Association of Western Riverside County. We hope that next year we will again be able to participate in this activity, as it is such a Community bonding event.
