WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS

Report from the Campaign Trail

2008 Campaign Underway

GSNT_logo

The law firm of Gresham, Savage, Nolan & Tilden has conducted another successful United Way Campaign.  Thanks to the leadership of their ECM, Jaime Reis, their campaign increased by nearly 27% with help from a variety of fundraisers, to go along with their payroll giving.  Several individuals from their law firm gave an example of how to LIVE UNITED by giving up a Saturday to host a Halloween barbeque for the children of Olive Crest*.  The children also took part in a costume contest, pumpkin carving and wrapped up the barbeque by making caramel apples.

Thank you all for your continued support!!

*Olive Crest is a United Way Member Agency.

Agency Spotlight:

SOROPTIMIST HOUSE OF HOPE

Kelly_SoroptimistA Place Called "HOPE"
Kelly is an addict. Up until four and a half years ago she lived most of her adult life in fear. Fear of her husband, living without drugs, and her life.  For 20 years her addiction to methamphetamines was hidden to everyone except her husband, who was also an addict. By the time she turned forty her life was spiraling out of control and she felt she had nothing to live for. Through desperation she found herself at the Soroptimist House of Hope in Banning where she learned how to take control of her life and live without drugs.

Not having worked since she was in her teens, Kelly slowly worked her way up in the retail industry and recently financed her first car. These days she is finally happy.  She loves her job, she loves being clean, and most of all, she finally loves herself.

Now her only fear is the fear of going back to her old lifestyle, a fear she never wants to lose.  Life is good for Kelly and it all started with a phone call to the Soroptimist House of Hope, a place where there really is hope.

Soroptimist House of Hope is a United Way Member Agency and your contributions help support their work.

GirlScouts_logoDOLORES LIVES UNITED
Clarice Smith, leader of Girl Scout Troop 1623 in Moreno Valley, wrote about her mom, Dolores:

"Mom, 84 years old, has always been a very active lady until February 2008 when she suffered a heart attack. After a month in the hospital she came to my home to recuperate.  Although normal activities were very difficult, she joined our Troop in March and helped to sell Girl Scout cookies at Wells Fargo bank.  She sat in a chair and "watched out" for girls as they sold the cookies.

GirlScoutsWhen our troop received volunteer patches we decided to give her one, too.  I can't tell you what that patch has meant to her.  Mom is back living in her own home and that patch is on proud display in a picture frame.  Simple things can have long range effects.  Who would think sitting and watching cookies could do so much to help someone recover."

Thanks, Mom Dolores for LIVING UNITED!

On Thursday, November 13th at 6:30pm in Union Station in Washington, DC, United Way of America organized the first-ever LIVE UNITED Flash Mob*. It was used as a campaign event, and was both powerful and fun at the same time. Possible uses of the flash mob are as numerous as you are creative.

*According to Wikipedia, a flash mob is "a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, and then quickly disperse."
