Chili pushes city charity total to $100,000!

chili cook-off RIVERSIDE, CA
- City employees raised more than $2,000 for United Way of the Inland Valleys in the annual chili cook-off held on Oct. 29 in White Park. With just two more weeks of the drive left, city employees have now raised $100,000 for the charity organization.
City departments squared off crock pot to crock pot filled with aromatic home recipes to win the No. 1 ribbon.  However, in a true government compromise, three departments shared the title: the Police Department, Parks Recreation & Community Services, and the City Attorney's Office.  The parks department handily won the Best Decoration Award with a grass hut design.

"We're having fun and serving a good lunch, but our cause is a serious one," said David Wright, the city public utilities general manager and campaign chair for United Way.  "City of Riverside employees routinely give thousands back to the community."

RCH HalloweenRiverside Community Hospital
held their annual Halloween Fair on the 31st of October. This annual event is attended by most of the staff at RCH.  The United Way of the Inland Valleys and several other businesses are represented by setting up information booths.  This provided UWIV with the opportunity to talk with RCH's staff, answering questions and informing them of the needs of our community.

Employee Campaign Managers, Sharon Radcliffe and Lillian Reyes-Maples, held departmental training earlier in the week and are very instrumental in the success of their campaign.  Paul Woerz, Vice President of Human Resources at RCH serves as this year's United Way Campaign Co-Chair.

Agency Spotlight:

Olive Crest Treatment Centers, Inc.

One Life at a Time®
"Anthony" came to Olive Crest as an extremely troubled teen.  At just 16, he had already failed multiple foster care placements, had a history of violence and property damage, and was a year and a half behind in school.  Despite his tough exterior, Anthony slowly began to open up in counseling and diligently worked with his tutor to make up his schoolwork.  He dedicated himself to overcoming his past challenges and was determined to create a better future.  After two years with Olive Crest, Anthony is a changed person.  He is now a responsible, hardworking, and successful young man.  Last summer, Anthony graduated from high school on time - with honors!

Olive Crest Treatment Centers, Inc. is a United Way Member Agency and your contributions help support their work.

Different people share with us the way they LIVE UNITED.

JosefinaJosefina Damian
is an exceptional individual who would be the first person to tell you that she is not.  For the past several years, she has volunteered her time to help package and distribute food bags three times per week.  She quietly labors through the process of tossing out rotten and inedible food.  Her volunteer spirit comes from a deep commitment to family.  She has four children who are all academically bright, and a very supportive husband. Seldom a day goes by that she doesn't pitch in to volunteer at the Community Settlement Association

Part of her commitment comes from her strong faith. She does not like accepting assistance without providing some service in return. This example has taken root in her children. They regularly volunteer in the community during the holidays.  "The community is like a family," she will tell you.  "You don't have to have money to be of service, just a desire to help."

That's how Josefina Damian LIVES UNITED...
