RUSD Campaign Kick-Off
BBQUnder the guidance of Dr. William Ermert, Riverside Unified School District held their United Way kick-off on Thursday, October 23rd.  The event began with a hamburger barbeque that was attended by hundreds of RUSD's staff.  The entertainment was provided by the Arlington High School Chamber Choir, who did a great job again this year!  A favorite fundraiser at this annual event is the opportunity drawing for gift baskets.

This year's baskets included one with nothing but chocolate goodies, a Christmas money tree and a Target gift basket, to name only three.  A special thanks to everyone involved with the kick-off and to the entire RUSD staff for their continued support of the United Way of the Inland Valleys.

Golden West
is the most recognized name in the manufactured housing industry on the West Coast. From its very first home built in 1965, Golden West's reputation for quality, design and value is evident in the more than 70,000 homes built with the Golden West name.

Today, Golden West has joined the team at United Way of the Inland Valleys.  They are showing how important community is and Living United with their first ever United Way Campaign. Golden West is "Leading the Way!"  We wish to congratulate them and welcome them to the United Way family.

Agency Spotlight:

The Salvation Army

1 Dad + 3 small kids + drug-addicted Mom = HOMELESSNESS

Being homeless is hard enough.  Imagine being a stay-at-home Dad to three small children ages 3, 4 and 5 and abandoned by your drug addicted wife.

"Jim" took care of the kids for 6 years while his wife worked.  After she left, Jim had no source of income and quickly ran out of money, ending up in a homeless shelter. He attempted to look for work during the day, but found it difficult to go on job interviews with his 3-year old with him (the other two were safely in school). He couldn't leave the kids alone at night to look for a job, either, as there was no one able to watch them and he didn't feel it was safe.

The Salvation Army came to the rescue by providing low-income preschool so he could look for work. After saving enough for a deposit, the Salvation Army again helped by paying the first month's rent. Now the equation looks more like this:

1 Dad + 3 kids + Salvation Army = HOPE!

How I live united graphic
Different people share with us the way they LIVE UNITED.
Matt_Friedlander"I Live United by volunteering my time in my community.  Growing up in Riverside, my mother taught me that there are things greater than self.  We need to not only take care of ourselves, but we need to take care of others who maybe can't.  This is what brought me to volunteering with the United Way of the Inland Valleys.  Volunteering has helped me learn more about myself and it has helped me to appreciate what I have and to work harder in my life.

Through my work with UWIV, I have met many incredible people and have become involved with other local agencies who's charge is helping those who are underprivileged and underserved, agencies such as the YWCA of Riverside County and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Riverside and San Bernardino counties.  My volunteer work has taught me that no matter what someone's social status or income level is, one person can make a difference.  YOU can make a difference...if you choose to Live United as I have."
