A Clean, Organized Garage Good For You and Your Buyer

garage

Think the garage doesn't matter when selling a house?  Think again!  The garage is almost as important as any other room in the house.  They are no longer just a place for cars.  Sports equipment, extra kitchen items, holiday decorations, toys, etc now find homes in this space too.  It's important that it shows well for buyers; let them envision living organized too!

Finally warm days are here and it's a good time to take stock of what's even in your garage...it's easy to forget what gets buried there.

Is it a functional space for you?  Will it appear that way to buyers?  Or has your garage simply become a storage area for your junk?

Don't rush out and buy anything yet.  First, put some serious thought into how you use the space.  Who else uses the space and how?  Buying shelves, bins, cabinets, etc is the last thing you do after do purging what you don't need.

Once you've decided how you want to use your space better (and maybe want it to show better too) here are some ideas to help you successfully finish the project:

  • When in doubt toss it out!  If you haven't used something in a year, ask yourself if it makes sense to keep it.  If it's a family heirloom, it should NOT be stored in the garage.

  • Sparkle and shine.  After you've emptied the garage take a few extra moments to sweep and wash the floors or walls. Consider a fresh coat of paint to the floor (using the correct product for the situation) and walls, especially if your house is on the market or will be soon.

  • Smart storage.  Once you know how you want to use the space, decide what kind of storage would be best.  There are a variety of products on the market for all budgets.

  • Smart space.  Use all your available space efficiently and effectively.  For items you need only occasionally consider overhead storage.  Want a workbench, but don't have the space?  Consider one that folds against the wall when not in use.

  • Logical location.  Store items close to where you use them or need them.  All like items should stay together.

  • Get help.  Consider hiring a professional organizer who can give you good ideas about how to use your space and keep you on task as you are going through things.  It can be helpful to have an unbiased 3rd party.
