"I wanted to give you an update on our house sale. We had three showings on the first day. All three showings put in an offer. We ended up selling for $30,000 over our asking price. I guess that was the best $85 we ever spent, because the staging really made the house show well. I am in Chicago now searching for a house and boy could these houses use some staging ; ) ! -M.K., State College
Thanks for all your help!"
*Did we mention this was just a couple of days ago...yes, in snowy, freezing cold January.* |

| What Clutter Costs | |
Ok, so you're ready to admit you *might* have a clutter problem. But you just can't seem to get motivated to clear some of it out. It's not that big a deal, right? Wrong. Clutter negatively impacts our life in more ways than you can imagine. Just for curiosity's sake, let's examine the hidden costs of clutter. We'll look at the dollar costs first. If you have a 1,500 square foot house worth $300,000, every square foot in the house is worth $200. If you have a 10x10 room you can't get into because of clutter, that's a $20,000 storage room! In terms of monthly cost, you're spending about 7% of your monthly mortgage on storage. Yikes! Next let's look at your time. Clutter can sap more time out of a day than you might be aware of at first. American spend, on average, one hour per day looking for lost items like shoes, keys, documents, or kids items. That's 7 hours per week, 28 hours per month, or 336 hours per year. That's 2 weeks of your life spent looking for stuff! It's pretty mind boggling when you break it down this way. Lastly, let's look at the emotional costs of clutter. How many times have you gotten upset, sad, or angry because you couldn't find what you need when you needed it? How much frustration has built up over not having any breathing room in your home? Perhaps even more so than the time and money wasted, clutter causes immense stress in most people which can surface in the form of arguments, health problems, and lost productivity. As you can see, excess clutter is not only an eyesore, but it really impacts the way we live our life. When people describe how their clutter makes them feel, it's always with the same, negative words. "I feel like I'm drowning in stuff." "I can't breathe in my own home." "My husband and I argue all the time about stupid things revolving around the mess." "The kids are always upset because they don't want to have friends over to our home." |
| Getting Organized Doesn't Have to Be Expensive or Difficult | | |

Organizing doesn't have to be expensive or difficult. Getting organized will most often only require your readiness and desire to do so, along with time and motivation. Don't be overwhelmed by the task at hand. Just take a few deep breaths and you'll be on your way. The only big mistake you can make is to not start.
1) Purging is Free. The most cost-effective way to get organized is to purge. The less you have to deal with, the easier it will be. Begin with a quick trip around a room that you've chosen to work in and gather together any obvious trash. Newspapers, old catalogues and junk mail can all be tossed or recycled.
2) Identify Items to Sell or Donate. Donating items to those in need can be very motivating. Knowing that someone else will be able to use an item, as opposed to it simply going into the trash, often makes it much easier to let go. Items donated to charity are eligible for a deduction on your income taxes. Be sure to keep proper documentation as to the item, condition and value.
You can also sell an item, which would bring a more immediate income.
3) "Have you seen my.....?" Do you feel disorganized every time you leave the house? Perhaps you spend too much time looking for your car keys, cell phone, sunglasses, or your purse? The old saying, 'A place for everything and everything in its place' is well known because of how true and how valuable it is. Just imagine how much easier leaving your house would be if you knew, each and every time, exactly where all of your important items were. They'd be waiting for you right where you put them.
4) Home Sweet Home. Decide on a location that makes sense. It may not be the first place you imagine it will be. It needs to be in the easiest and most functional spot. If the place you choose doesn't feel right, you can always change it. Once you find that spot, then you can choose a container. If you have a number of sets of keys, perhaps a small row of hooks next to the back door would be best. Maybe a small wicker basket where you can leave loose items and then set your purse next to it is your ideal solution.
5) Closet Clean Out. Look at your closet in a new way. Sometime, the easiest way to organize a closet is to begin by removing everything. You will want to do a quick purge for anything you know you will never wear again. Anything that doesn't make you feel fantastic should go. You should smile every time you get dressed. Clothes Mentor and Plato's Closet will buy your gently used and name brand used clothing.
Group like items together. You get to decide what that means. It can mean all jeans together, all blouses, etc. or it can mean all clothes of a certain color or category such as dressy or business casual. If you prefer, you can group actual outfits together and even add the accessories.
Get rid of old wire and other mismatched hangers you've accumulated over the years.
As you can see, getting organized doesn't have to be expensive at all. Look at it as an investment that you're making in yourself. The more organized you are, the more efficient you will be--which will leave you with more time for the things you truly love and want to enjoy. |
