Room to Breathe Home Organizing & Staging
Issue: #43August 2010

Greetings!

I've been doing a little bit of travelling this summer and you know my favorite part?  Coming home. My house welcomes me home with big arms and lots of puppy dog kisses.

I've always had the puppy dog kisses, but until recently my house had turned its back on me and said stay away.  My spaces weren't truly reflecting me and I felt more comfortable in the strange places I was staying while away.  This is no good.  Our homes should be our ultimate vacation places, don't you agree?  Imagine living where each day feels like a little vacation.

What do your spaces say about you?  Do they say come and hang out for awhile or stay away?  You'll have to read more below...

Simply,

-Jessica

What Your Space Says About You

When I moved into my new space five years ago, I was disappointed that I didn't get an opportunity to do all the renovations I had envisioned.  My problem is that I'm constantly visualizing how much better things can be in a space. I've decided that I'm going to stop waiting for the "perfect" moment (enough money, finding the "perfect" piece of furniture, the exact color, the exact texture, the perfect size storage container, etc) to make changes.  No time like the present, right?

I love the freedom I now feel that I've let the idea of the "perfect" room go...it's funny what actually works and looks good once you let go of the preconeived thoughts and ideas.  To me, a home should be somewhere you look forward to returning and it needs to convey beauty, comfort and joy from every angle.

What does your living space say about you?
  • Home tour: Trust me -- Our walls can and do talk. Walk around your home and follow the trail of fingerprints and footprints. What messages are written on walls and surfaces? What messages do you want your home to deliver? And finally, how large is the gap between what your home says and what you want it to say about you and your family?

  • Take inventory: When I take stock of my guest bedroom, I see a lack of warmth. Therefore, my to-do list includes a plan to make this room feel cozier and more inviting; especially for my guests. Take your own room-by-room tour of your home and make honest notes about positives and negatives.

  • Organization: A disorganized space speaks volumes about a disorganized life. Hit the pause button and think about how organization can help you create the life you really want. Establish priorities and use organization to help you accomplish those goals. For instance, has clutter wrecked your "rec" room? Look for solutions. Create space for family fun by organizing books, games, music and movies.

  • Streamline: Is your sink filled with dirty dishes? If so, clean dishes may be the problem. That's because if your kitchen cabinets are overstuffed with excess, there may be no room to unload the dishwasher. And a packed dishwasher makes it difficult to clear the sink. But when we streamline cabinets, closets and drawers, we create space for order.

Now go take a little walk around your own home...what do you see?  What do you love?  What do you love a little less and wish you could change?
