Sure, reading your favorite book is relaxing. But trying to pry it from the shelf, without also pulling down a dozen others, not working so well for you? Not to mention the crammed in magazines, dust covered encyclopedias, old yearbooks, and lord only knows what else. Whether your "library" consists of only a few books, a bunch of books or other media, there's a solution for you. A bookcase shouldn't only hold books; it should be visually appealing to you, not an eyesore.
If you only have a few books:
Look around your home for pretty objects that you can showcase alongside your book collection.
If you have lots of books:
Instead of shoving them on the shelves any which way, separate by category to keep the space from looking cluttered and to allow different configurations.
If you have books and other media:
Got more to organize than just books? Create space on your shelves for everything from that ever growing DVD collection to stacks of loose family photos.
Some other neat ideas to try:
1. Layer to create dimension. Prop photos frames behind stacks or rows of book. Try assembling a cluster of collectibles to add visual appeal.
2. Pick a color to pull everything together. Pick one color and use in various spots on or near the bookcase to create a cohesive feeling.
3. Paint the insides. Try painting the rear, inside portion of the shelves a different color. This adds contrast and sets off the objects within.
4. Balance the look. Make sure that a cluster of books appears on every shelf. Remember too, that they don't have to be stored only horizontally.
5. Mix and match. Arrange most of your books vertically to save space, but incorporate a few horizontal to spark interest.
6. Don't over do it. Leave at least one quarter of each shelf free to give you a sense of airiness.
7. Hide unsightly stuff. Contain anything that isn't display worthy. Use colorful labeled boxes or decorative baskets.
8. Mix the old and the new. A few vintage or modern touches can add character.
9. Categorize the media. Stow music or DVDs in stackable boxes and sort by genre.
