Issue: # 12 February/2008
Greetings!
Now I know that Green Week was a couple of months ago, but I purposely ignored it at that time.  No, it wasn't because I forgot or because I didn't have time to write about it...I've actually had it planned since then to celebrate this month.  How's that for organization and planning ahead?  :)

I wanted to wait and bring it up again now so that the issue would stay fresh on your mind.  I often feel that we celebrate this day, that month or a week of something or other.  Then the event is over and you know that out of sight usually means out of mind.  I believe this is an issue that needs to remain fresh on our brains every day.

Read on to learn why this issue is so important to me.  You'll also get some tips on going green for a healthier and happier world!

It's All About the Green!

Going Green that is...what did you think I meant?

Many of you would be very disheartened to know what I "throw away" from clients homes each and every day.  It makes me sick at times to know that I may be single handedly filling up the landfills.  Okay, so not really, but sometimes it feels that way.

I try my best to recycle as much as possible, but on huge organizing projects it can be very difficult to do so.  It's during this purging process that I encourage clients to really consider what they are purchasing and bringing into their homes.  I would be willling to bet $1,000,000 that 95% of what people purchase is NOT necessary to their everyday living!  It's just more plastic, more natural resources consumed, more stuff in the landfills, more pollution all so something can collect dust on shelf or in a closet.

I really do practice what I preach...if we all lived simpler not only would life be a bit easier, but our earth would be healthier.

Here are some very simple things I do and encourage you to try too:
  • Use cloth/canvas bags for groceries (not only is good for the environment, but you don't have to deal with all those annoying plastic bags everywhere!)
  • When only purchasing a couple items say "No Thank You" to the plastic bag
  • Wash clothes in cold water
  • Line dry clothing (lots of great products on the market to make this neat and easy)
  • Use non-toxic cleaning products.  (I use these in all client's homes)
-Did you know  if we all switched to using 1 container of natural laundry detergent we would save enough petroleum that could heat/cool 13,000 homes for 1 year?

  • Switch to Energy Saving Bulbs.  They cost a little bit more, but last forever and consume less energy.
  • Say "no, thank you" to ATM receipts.
-Did you know that receipts from 8 billion ATM transactions a year are one the biggest sources of litter on our planet? By saying no, it could save a roll of paper more than 2 billion feet long-enough to circle the equator more than 15 times!
  • Use real plates and silverware.  Not only will you help the earth, but you won't have to deal with storing the party supplies.
  •  Use a  reusable water bottle (Nalgene brand is great-super durable, leak proof, dishwasher and freezer safe)
-Did you know each day in the U.S. more than 60 million plastic water bottles are thrown away?
  • Cancel catalog/magazine subscriptions.  You can look at Pottery Barn and such online!  I'm always emailing links to clients for product ideas.
  • Remove your name from the junk mail lists.
  • Donate clothing, shoes, accessories, household items and furniture to Goodwill, St. Vincent DePaul, Womens' Resource Center, Faith Centre, Youth Services Bureau, Habitat for Humanity, Centre Peace, etc.  There is also a Centre County Freecycle group at Yahoo Groups.

Seriously consider the following before buying anything:

  • Do you need it or do you want it?
  • How and when will you use it?
  • Do you have a specific place in your home for the item?  If not call Room to Breathe to help get organized once and for all!
  • Can you pay cash for the item? (if you need to use a credit card, you can't afford it!)

There's much more we could all be doing, but this is just a start.  I hope you will join me as I do my part and continue to work towards going green.  We owe it to ourselves!

What Can You Do?
It's as easy as refilling an ink cartridge...

Did you know?

  • More than 3.4 liters of oil are needed to make one new laser printer cartridge.
  • In just 12 months, cartridge recycling could save more than 4.3 million liters of oil.
  • A printer cartridge thrown into landfill can take up to 450 years to decompose.
  • On average, there is 1 printer for every 4 employees with a monthly operating cost of $230.00 per printer.
What does all this mean to you?  There is now a way to protect the environment and save as much as 50%on the high cost of laser and ink printer cartridges - Cartridge World is now open in your area!

Cartridge World is the industry leader in printer cartridge refilling and remanufacturing.  The rapid growth and success of our business has been the result of our focus on three basic principals; quality, service and price.
