 Dear Jessica...Your Questions Answered
SimplifyHelping You Help Yourself

Dear Jessica,

I desperately want to get organized, but every time I try I get completely overwhelmed.  Where and how do I begin?  I feel like the clutter is beginning to take over my life.  Please help!

-Mary Beth

Dear Mary Beth,

You are definitely not alone in your feelings.  The idea of clutter can be very overwhelming and tackling it can be even more frustrating.  Don't worry about the how and where, just jump right in and start today.  The sooner you get started the sooner you'll achieve your goals.  Getting started is certainly the most difficult part and I always tell my clients that it often gets worse before it gets better.

Start by making a reasonable 'To Do' List and by that I mean start with a drawer, a cabinet, a small closet or a section of a desk.  Accomplish small tasks first and cross them off of your 'To Do' list as you go.  This gives you a wonderful feeling of accomplishment.  Find simple strategies, systems, and products that work for you and utilize them on a regular basis.  Keep in mind that there is no one way to get organized.  There are many different solutions for many different people.  The key is finding one that is easy to use and maintain.  Don't worry if this takes more than one try---that's okay!  Even after you've established a system it may need to be adjusted as your needs change.  You will need to commit to being organized by setting aside at least 15 minutes a day to put things where they belong and sort through items that may have accumulated.

By wanting to make these changes you are already on your way to living happier, healthier, and more organized.   Not only will you figure out what's important, but also will have the time to do things you truly enjoy.

Good Luck,

Jessica
