$100 donation to ISAC purchased over fifty school uniforms and valuable food and sanitation supplies for the children in a rural orphanage!
ISAC alumni, Melanie Roth, who attended our Teach Rural Children Program (way back in 2005!) made a donation of $100 this year. She wanted us to use this money to help rural children in the best possible way. Our volunteer Joshua Johnson who is currently attending the Grassroots Community Development Program was assigned the task of disbursing this amount.
Reciprocating this trust, Joshua made the best possible use of the donation much to the delight of the needy Al-Qaim education trust and school located in the state of Maharashtra. Joshua purchased school uniforms for the 50 orphans who study in this school. With the funds left over he bought snacks, toothpaste, washing powder and other cleaning supplies for the organization!
Established in 1998, this residential school is located along the Pune-Mumbai highway near the town of Lonavla. Presently over fifty boys are living on site; they range in age from five to fifteen years. Most are orphans who have lost both parents, or that are disabled and unable to provide care. Nearly all of the boys have moved here from the states of Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh.
While it is unfortunate that these children have been displaced, Mr. Mohammad Ali Abdeali who runs the school with his wife works very hard in securing their lives. The school and orphanage not only provides food and shelter but also runs a small English medium school for the boys. These services seek to insure that the boys be provided improved quality of life and will grow into responsible, self-sustaining adults.
