Starfish Aquatics Institute

October 29, 2009

As a recognized SAI Training Provider and respected member of the aquatics industry, you are encouraged to review and provide honest feedback to the USLSC concerning their current report.  SAI Director of StarGuard and Training, Lake White, was an observer present during the organization and research process of this report, although not as a recognized voting participant.

The report has now entered the public comment section and we strongly recommend that you review these documents and voice your opinion.  Once these concepts become recognized as aquatic industry standards, they will have tremendous impact on ALL lifeguards, pool managers and operators.

SAI will continue to update you about the potential impact this, and other developments in the aquatic industry, will have upon our Training Providers.

 USLSC Official Statement

The United States Lifeguard Standards Coalition (USLSC) is offering their initial, draft outcomes for public review and comment. The comment period is 45 days, ending on December 12, 2009. The public comment period provides an opportunity for representatives of organizations that set regulations, standards, or practice guidelines in lifeguarding, as well as anyone who has an interest, to react to the science review and provide comments for consideration.

The United States Lifeguard Standards Coalition is a project sponsored by the American Red Cross, the United States Lifesaving Association, and the YMCA of the USA. It is based on a fundamental view that lifeguard practice should, wherever possible, be based on the best available evidence. Therefore, in the case of 15 key issues, evidence was thoroughly researched and consensus recommendations were developed based on that evidence.

We thank all of the participants and organizations, who have given their time and resources so generously, and the National Swimming Pool Foundation, for a generous grant which has greatly facilitated our work.
