On May 12, KCCD hosted a press conference to launch its Free Foreclosure Prevention Workshops on a semi-monthly basis to help families avoid foreclosure. Classes will be offered in English and Korean. The next class will be offered May 28th.
Hyepin Im, KCCD President stated, "With the foreclosure crisis impacting so many families and communities, KCCD is pleased to be announcing these valuable workshops to the community. As the only Asian Agency in the country who is currently offering certified foreclosure counseling in the country, we wanted to provide additional venues to help homeowners and educate them on their options on a timely basis. We're grateful to all our partners including Freddie Mac, California Reinvestment Coalition, Homefree USA and NHS of LA amongst others who are supporting this initiative."
Jin Kim, KCCD Executive Director stated, "We see that the foreclosure crisis is only getting worse and we want to make sure that people are aware that assistance is available. We are getting calls from all over the country including, New York, Atlanta, Seattle asking for help. In the LA County alone in the first quarter of 2008, there were 7,054 foreclosures. That is 314.5% change from quarter at previous year. Over 20,339 notices of default were issued to families within the Los Angeles area. Statewide, there were 47,171 foreclosure, 327.6% change from previous year. The situation is expected to only get worse in 2008."
The Council of Korean Churches Executive Director Rev. John Park stated, "With 75% of the Korean American community connected with the Korean American church, we believe that our role and partnership with KCCD is important in connecting these resources to our congregation members. With so many Korean Americans being business owners who also have employees, I am concerned about the ripple effect on the family, the employees and the children. We need to work together if we are to successfully respond to this crisis that is is impacting our families, congregations and communities."
Josh An, KCCD Program Manager stated, "As we work with various clients and lenders, we're finally seeing that some progress is happening and that servicers and lenders are being more responsive than the past. It's allowing us to help more clients effectively." |
