KCCD 1st Home Preservation and Foreclosure Prevention Fair
Over 150 Troubled Homeowners Turn Out Seeking Assistance

On March 29, 2008, KCCD hosted its 1st Home Preservation & Foreclosure Prevention Fair at LA Christian Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles.  Over 150 troubled homeowners seeking assistance filled the room. KCCD President opened the fair and welcomed the speakers including Congressman Xavier Becerra who brought greetings and his commitment to helping families facing foreclosure.

Hyepin Im, President of KCCD, stated,"With the culture of shame being so strong in our community, we were quite surprised to see so many turn out for this event. The fair provided an opportunity to inform the community of resources that are available and as well as provide perspective that they are not alone in this foreclosure crisis. We're very grateful to Congressman Xavier Becerra and our partnering organizations, sponsors and speakers who allowed us to provide this invaluable service to the community."

Jin Kim, KCCD Executive Director stated, "The large turn out confirms our guess that many Korean and Asian Americans are equally impacted by this foreclosure crisis. It was very overwhelming to hear so many of the participants share their story with us after the fair desperate for any assistance they can receive. So many of them have maxed out all their resources including their credit cards and have nowhere else to go."

Participating speakers included Congressman Xavier Becerra, Bin Plume, Office of Congresswoman Diane Watson, Ceceilia Alatorre, Office of Councilmember Jose Huizar and John S. Brady, Office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Bin Plume from the Office of Congresswoman Diane Watson said, "On behalf of Congresswoman Diane E. Watson, I would like to commend KCCD for its outstanding work in transforming the lives of many families in the Korean and Asian communities by hosting the 1st Home Preservation and Foreclosure Prevention Fair. It is through organizations like KCCD that families in need are able to gain inspiration and hope in the midst of the housing crisis. Integrating language and cultural barriers, KCCD has transformed so many lives. I look forward to working closely with KCCD to further revitalize and improve the quality of life in these communities."
Two KCCD clients who received foreclosure prevention assistance also shared their story and encouraged the participants to seek assistance before it is too late. Both expressed the importance of having an advocate like KCCD in navigating the complex and sometimes frustrating experience of trying to contact lenders and servicers.

Other panelists included Reggie Brandveen, Freddie Mac,  Jin Kim, KCCD, Tiarzha Taylor, Countrywide Home Loans, Sean Paik, New Star Realty, Dawnnesha Smith, LA County Dept of Consumer Affairs, Jonathan Santiago, LA Housing Department, Jerrold Myer, U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development, and Joshua An, KCCD.

The event finished with free raffle drawings, with grand prize of flat screen TV.  Many participants eagerly listened to all the panels and had chance to speak to representatives from participating banks to discuss their loans.
