Hyepin Im, KCCD President & CEO, stated "We're pleased to be announcing this historic first time Home Preservation and Foreclosure Prevention Fair in the Korean American and Asian American community in the country. Because of the model minority myth, the Korean and Asian American community are consistently left out of the key conversations, policy decisions and resources being committed to helping families including our current national foreclosure crisis. Even the national 800 Hope Line set up to help families does not provide language assistance except in Spanish. Even recently as a month ago, KCCD was the only Asian American agency in the country providing certified foreclosure counseling. This is a tragedy where there is a significant gap beween need and supply! But today, I'm pleased to announce that in partnership with many of our longtime local and national key partners including Freddie Mac, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Bank of America, Citibank, NHSLA, CRC, Homefree USA and others, we will be able to offer assistance to many families of all communities but especially to the Korean American community who needs in-language assistance."
"It is important to Freddie Mac to work with trusted community organizations like KCCD to support long term homeownership," said Julie Sun, Corporate Relations and Housing Outreach Manager of Freddie Mac. "Together, we help homeowners understand responsible options and how to protect their home investment."
Jin Kim, KCCD Executive Director, said "In the five counties nearing Los Angeles (LA, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura), there are about 5,000 families and about 70-100 Korean families are losing their homes through foreclosure every month. Unfortunately, because of shame factor, high language barrier and lack of outreach, many families in the Korean and Asian American community are completely unaware that there are real options that may be available to prevent them from foreclosure and have suffered in silence. We hope that through this fair, we will be able to empower more families to seek out assistance and to call us when we can help them."
Lori Gay, President & CEO of LANHS, stated "LA NHS supports the work of KCCD and is pleased that the foreclosure prevention fair on March 29th will reach families in dire need of help and hope during this difficult season. It is imperative that families and business owners who are at risk of foreclosure attend this event and call for help in order to preserve their homes and businesses during this economic downturn".
Ken Bell, District Representative of Office of Congresswoman Diane Watson, stated "The foreclosures of homes not only affects the previous homeowner but also the entire community case-in-point, the State of California and the City of Los Angeles stand to lose more than $100 million dollars in property tax revenue this year, which pays for the public services that we all utilize and need. Congresswoman Diane Watson wants her constituents to know that her office can supplement KCCD's efforts by directing them to other resources that can assist them to make educated decisions for the overall wellbeing of their family."
Joshua An, KCCD Program Manager, stated "Since October 2007, KCCD has helped more than 20 families with foreclosure prevention needs. We have had many successes in delivering options for families including helping one family temporarily reduce their monthly mortgage payment to $100 while they were transitioning to a new business opportunity. Without this assistance, the family would have gone to foreclosure."
KCCD Home Preservation & Foreclosure Prevention Fair will provide opportunities to learn directly from lenders, counselors and industry experts on how to avoid foreclosure and options for those who are already in trouble. The fair will consist of plenary sessions, workshops and exhibit booths. Admission is free! Come on time to learn about the various resources!
