Speaker Highlights:
Director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Jay Hein to Speak

Over 70 funders and program experts are confirmed to speak at KCCD’s 5th Lighting the Community Conference, including Jay Hein, Director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives; Terry Hasdorff, Director of United States Agency for International Development (USAID); and Richard Benbow, General Manager of the City of Los Angeles Community Development Department.

Jay F. Hein
was named Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives on August 3, 2006. He is also the founding president of the Sagamore Institute for Policy Research in Indianapolis, Indiana. In this capacity, Jay directed the institute’s research portfolio concentrating on a range of community- based policies such as welfare-to-work, access to college, affordable health care and crime prevention.

Ms. Terri Hasdorff is the Director of the Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and returns to Washington from her native Alabama where she served as the Executive Director of the Governor's Office of Faith-Based & Community Initiatives. Her experience includes working in the White House Office of Public Liaison as an assistant to the chief liaison for the President to the faith- based community.

Richard Benbow took the helm as General Manager of the Community Development Department (CDD) on June 16, 2006. His appointment by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa followed a successful 30-year career with the City of Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA/LA), where, as Chief Operating Officer, he oversaw the day-to-day operations and staff responsible for all projects and programs undertaken by the 223-employee organization, with an annual budget of over $400 million.

KCCD’s 4th Annual Legacy Awards Dinner recognizes those who have contributed to the advancement of the community. The dinner will be held at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los Angeles, California on November 13, 2006 from 6pm – 9pm.
