| | "Costello dreams of flying" Monoprint 10 X 13
Costello, my dog (I say my dog but really I am his human), has been the subject of many monoprints and above is the latest. He is almost 15 years old and his hips are failing. I help him up and down stairs and in and out. He wears handles like a doggie suit case. Sometimes he uses a wheel chair that holds his hips up for him. He attends all my workshops, although mostly he sleeps. Sometimes I look over and see that he is dreaming, I see his feet moving like he is running or I imagine that he is flying in his dream.
Costello is the happiest dog I have ever known. He has a strong will to live and a need to keep an eye on me. He hangs out with me and has a permanent bed in the studio and I think he lives for Thursdays when my art buddies join me in the studio. He gets lots of attention and treats from all his friends. People have gotten used to stepping over him as we work in the studio.
I am aware that these are some of his last days and these days are precious to me. Costello has gifted me with his animal wisdom and unconditional love. I am a better human being and artist because of this depth of understanding that only comes from an animal connection. Praise to all the animals who have taught me about the true heart of the world. Without animals my life would be desolate and my art would be lacking verisimilitude.
Because of the dogs in my life I know what is important. And one of the important things I have learned is, to go for walks and smell stuff. Costello in particular has taught me that it isn't the thing that is important but the thing's shadow. Think about it.
Until next time, Denise
Horace Mann School I will be an artist in residence with the Horace Mann School in Manhattan, New York. October 1st through the 8th. I am excited about this. I will be working with students 3 yrs old to seniors in high school. We will be printmaking and art making. I will also have an exhibit and I will (gulp) be speaking to the entire assembly. As you can imagine I am spending a lot of time preparing for this teaching opportunity.
Studio Sale This year's 8th annual studio sale will be: November 20th and 21st 2010
