Liver Vascular Malformations in HHT & Recommendations for
Management and Treatment
 By Guadalupe Garcia-Tsao, M.D.
 and Lawrence Young, M.D.
Yale University School of Medicine

Liver vascular malformation (VMs) in the liver are common in HHT.  However, they cause symptoms in only a minority of patients later in adult life.  The liver receives blood from two blood vessels, the hepatic artery and the portal vein, and blood exits the liver through the hepatic vein.  VMs result in 3 types of abnormal blood flow patterns (short circuits or :shunts"); from hepatic artery to hepatic vein, from portal vein to hepatic ven and from hepatic artery to portal vein.  The most common is hepatic artery to hepatic vein shunt.

9th HHT Scientific Conference
Antalya, Turkey

 By Luisa Maria Botella, Ph.D.
HHT Global Research and Medical Advisory Board
Centro Investigaciones Biologicas, CSIC (Spain)

The 9th HHT Scientific Conference was held in Kemer, Antalya (Turkey) at the Mirada del Mar Hotel from May 20th to 25th and was organized by the HHT Center in Utah (USA), coordinated by Drs. Jamie McDonald, Pinar Bayrak-Toydemir and Kevin Whitehead, together with an international organization committee lead by Carmelo Bernabeu, Ph.D. (Spain), chair of the HHT Global Research and Medical Advisory Board.

The goal of the HHT Scientific Conference is to provide a meeting point for clinicians and scientists where participants have access to the most recent advances in clinical research, therapeutics, and basic research in the field of HHT.  This is the one time every other year when clinicians and scientists from around the world present their HHT research findings to an audience of attendees, this year over 150 clinicians and scientists descended upon Kemer, Turkey.  Every conference, we see more young scientists, new to HHT research, join forces with veteran researchers.  The enthusiasm and collaborations that ignite from this meeting are priceless to the HHT community because the individuals who attend this meeting will ultimately find a cure for HHT.
