Teen Art in the South End and Thaddeus Miles:
A Partnership for Youth and the Arts
United South End Settlements is preparing for the Fall session of Teen Art in the South End, a free weekly art workshop for youth ages 12 to 15. Through its partnership with the Boston Center for the Arts, these weekly workshops offer visits to galleries, time in artist studios, and an opportunity to learn new techniques and work with professional artists. Examining Self Portraits, youth will exploring ideas of self and identity and how artists represent themselves. This year's programming is made possible in part through the role of Thaddeus Miles as Director of Public Safety at MassHousing. Miles, a community activist and artist with deep roots in the areas of youth advocacy and community engagement, has worked with residents of MassHousing for over 18 years, and has been honored as "Crime Fighter of the Year" by the Boston Police Department. A talented photographer, work from Thaddeus' recent 365 Project will be on display at USES' Harriet Tubman Gallery at 566 Columbus Ave from October 1 - November 17. A reception, sponsored by Mt. Washington Bank, will be held October 17 from 6-8pm. Many thanks to MassHousing and to Thaddeus Miles for his continued work supporting youth in our community! Massachusetts Cultural Council Supports Arts in Early Learning Series!
 | | Image © 2012 United Way |
The Mass Cultural Council (MCC) recently awarded a grant to United South End Settlements to support the Children's Art Centre's Arts in Early Learning Series. This unique series of programming for preschool-aged children includes classes in creative movement and music, storytelling and dramatic play, and sensory exploration. Each class and activity was created using the Massachusetts Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences with the goal of using the arts to promote school readiness skills. The Children's Art Centre believes that the arts provide an integral, engaging, and accessible method of learning for young children in everything from language and early literacy to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills. Our Arts in Early Learning Series fully reflects this belief.
The Arts in Early Learning series is currently offered to USES' Early Childhood Education Program, and in to parents and children in the South End/Lower Roxbury community through a partnership with Thrive in Five. Grants like the MCC's enable the Children's Art Centre to expand access to Arts in Early Learning programming to other Early Childhood centers and programs in the community. Thanks to the MCC for their support!
