Greetings:
As May comes to a close, I would be remiss without honoring all the teachers and educators who are helping build a strong community here in the South End/Lower Roxbury on a daily basis. From the teachers in our Early Childhood Education Program and After School Program at our 48 Rutland Street building, to the Technology Education, Adult Basic Education, and Transition to College teachers here at our 566 Columbus Avenue building, thank you to all our teachers. You are helping our program participants build a better life for themselves, not just in the present, but well into the future. Please stop by our buildings and thank our teachers for all they do for our program participants every day. Sincerely, Kevin Lee HepnerPresident & CEO |

Staff Spotlight: Melody Valdes
A few years ago, Melody Valdes was set to go to law school in New York, and initially just came to Boston to spend the summer . However, she found more in Boston than just a summer getaway. She found a home.
"At first, I thought I was just going to stay here for a year," says Melody, who, along with Cassie Alexander, is an Early Childhood Education teacher in the Dolphin Classroom at 48 Rutland Street. "I really wanted to do something that helped society before I went off to law school."
When talking about why she decided to stay at USES instead of pursuing her law degree, Melody's face lit up when she said, "I really wanted to see the same group of children progress through our program. At USES, I really feel like what I do makes a difference in the lives of these kids. There is a purpose to what I do, and I can see the fruits of my labors everyday in the faces of these children."
These days, Melody is hard at work shaping the minds of our future leaders in the Dolphin classroom. From Circle Time, where kids work on their ability to talk with others and effectively communicate their thoughts, to Gross Motor Activities, Melody is constantly teaching the children and helping them develop in the best way possible.
Melody no longer has aspirations to work in the corporate world. Instead, she wants to build upon her Bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania
by eventually pursuing a doctorate in developmental psychology. "I am really interested," says Melody, "in how we can properly prepare these children for the life ahead of them."
The children in our program have their whole life in front of them, and thanks to teachers like Melody Valdes, they will be well prepared for that journey. Thank you, Melody.

In Their Own Words: "Why I Teach at USES"
I love working together with parents for the common goal of educating children to the best of their ability."Walking around the hallways of our buildings, it is easy to see why both participants and teachers stay part of the USES family. In their own words, our teachers share why they teach at USES:
"I love watching the growth of these kids every day." - Tamare Gordon, Early Childhood Education (ECE) Teacher
"I love being immersed in a classroom with so many rich cultures and different backgrounds." - Ana Belanger, ECE Teacher
"I love working with students who are happy to engage with us, set goals for themselves, and work towards those goals." - Teresa Malone, Educational Counselor/Intake Coordinator
"I love the opportunity to be part of the learning and development of these children, knowing what we teach them will be with them for the rest of their life." - Helen Schroeder, ECE Teacher/Children's Art Centre Assistant
"I love the families here. They are like a second family to me." - Delphine Jackson, ECE Teacher
"I love shaping the future leaders of the world." - Jasen Beverly, After School Program Group Leader
"I love that I am changing their lives. These students have been shut out of other educational opportunities, and because of that, they really appreciate what we offer here." - Barbara Alpert, Adult Basic Education (ABE) Literacy Teacher
"I love seeing the children develop, grow, and overcome challenges every day." - Karen Liberatore, Assistant Director of Out of School Time Programs
"I love the smiles the children show every day." - Kristin Cecil, ECE Teacher
"I love working together with parents for the common goal of educating children to the best of our ability." - Cassie Alexander, ECE Teacher
"I love inspiring the students and having the students inspire me." - David Lowe, ABE Math Teacher

REBUILDING THE CHILDREN'S ART CENTRE WALL
 | | Children's Art Centre wall, 1950 |
The Children's Art Centre gateway and courtyard wall, a century-old landmark of our space on Rutland Street, had begun to show its age in recent years. Time and gravity had slowly weakened the structural integrity of the wall's foundation, forcing the iconic gateway to be locked. This spring, thanks to generous support from the George B. Henderson Fund, the wall and gateway underwent a complete rebuild. Restoration experts painstakingly used new and reused materials to restore the wall's structural integrity while maintaining its historic look. We are hoping this new wall will take the Art Centre through its next hundred years and beyond! | | Rebuilt Children's Art Centre wall, 2012 |
