APRIL 2012
USES Header
Greetings,

There are thousands of people who come through our doors each year. And then there are those who may not visit us at the Harriet Tubman House or at the Children's Art Centre and South End House, but who stay connected to us in meaningful ways. We really appreciate all you do to support USES, and we are happy to have you as part of the USES Family.

Please allow me to introduce you to Ruby Goddard. Her story can provide a glimpse to why our work is so important.

Ruby is in her seventies and is a member of USES' Platinum Singers, which helps seniors use their voice in a healthy way. The program also helps seniors overcome loneliness and isolation. "I joined the Platinum Singers because they help me to grow in my love of music. It gives me an opportunity to get out and meet new friends."

On March 29th, USES hosted "In the Mix", an intergenerational concert featuring performances by  the Platinum Singers and the 60-voice Lake Highland Academy Singers from Orlando, Florida. The sounds that filled our building were truly magical. After the concert, children gave special gift bags to each Platinum Singer. Many eyes were misty as the children interacted lovingly with our seniors.

This is how your support touches people's lives and helps them overcome seemingly insurmountable circumstances. Please continue your generous support of our work.  We can't do it without your help.

Sincerely,

Kevin Lee Hepner

ARTS & CULTURE

Children's Art Centre

Our Children's Art Centre is continuing to provide high-quality art programming for youth around the South End. The Teen Arts in the South End program is continuing its success, offering free art engagement classes for youth ages 12-15.

Our building is getting a facelift! Be on the lookout as we are building a new red brick wall outside our Rutland Street building. The current wall has been there for almost 100 years, and we hope this new wall will protect our buildings for another 100.

Helen Schroeder of the Children's Art Centre was honored on April 13 with an award for her work around physical environment by the Boston Alliance for Early Education and the Boston Alliance for the Education of Young Children at their 11th annual Early Educators Award Gala. Congratulations, Helen!

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

After School Program

The school year has been filled with field trips, performances around Boston, and other out-of-school time activities. Artwork from the youth is making its way through the community, with Group 3 being featured at Boston Center for the Arts' Community Windows and Group 4 having some of their artwork displayed at the Fresh Eyes exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts.

Camp Hale

Gearing up for the 112th season up at Squam Lake, Camp Hale is continuing the rich tradition of bringing youth outside
the city limits. This year, we are continuing the successful Rookie Camp and Father/Mentor Son weekend, as well as offering an all girls session for the first time in Camp Hale history. Registration is open now, so visit our website for more information!

Early Childhood Education

Classes are in full swing this spring season. Jumpstart is continuing their amazing volunteer work in both our Sunshine and Dolphin classrooms, working with the children to enhance the Language and Literacy parts of our curriculum. We are also fortunate to have five new Northeastern Service Learners from a Child Intervention & Treatment class this spring, working with our youngest in the Infant and Toddler Room. With all these volunteers, our staff are able to provide even better care to the young children in our neighborhood.

WORKFORCE READINESS

Adult Basic Education

This fiscal year, we have helped 24 graduates receive their GED, and we continue to be on pace for a record number of GED graduates this year.

Technology Education

The Online Learning Readiness program, made possible by a grant to the City of Boston and the Timothy Smith Network from the Department of Commerce, celebrated the largest number of graduates and students across all program locations during the last cycle. Classes continue as we help our neighbors take the next step forward in their careers. Additionally, the Computer Training for Employment class continues to thrive, with amazing graduates poised for the 21st century workplace.

Transition to College

For those who have earned their GED or completed their high school diploma, USES is helping them to continue with post-secondary education. Spending 20 hours a week with USES staff, these participants are learning the specific skills and abilities needed in order to successfully enroll in college by the end of the term. In its second year of programming here at USES, we have 23 students enrolled and taking the leap towards economic self-sufficiency.

SENIOR SERVICES

The over 20 participants in our Platinum Singers program continue to touch the hearts of our neighbors with their beautiful voices. On March 29, USES hosted an inter-generational concert, "In the Mix", hosting 60 youth from the Lake Highland Academy Singers. After performances by both groups, they joined together in harmony to sing a group song for an audience of 200 people.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT:
TIFFANY KINGCANNON

"Inspiring. If I had just one

word to describe Tiffany Kingcannon, it would be inspiring," says Kate Lopci, Director of Workforce Readiness at United South End Settlements.

Kate's thoughts reflect a common understanding of the work that Tiffany does for USES these days. Three days a week, Tiffany comes in to the Harriet Tubman House on Columbus Avenue, and helps out throughout the Workforce Readiness programming. From tutoring, to student intake, to assisting in the Transition to College classes, Tiffany is continuing to give back to the organization that gave so much to her.

For Tiffany, education is so important. "Education is a must," she says. "That is

why it has been so important for me to instill this in my kids, getting them to realize the importance of education from an early age." Tiffany started her education pathway right here at USES, receiving her GED through our Adult Basic Education program.

While Tiffany was born in Colorado and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, she has finally settled down in Dorchester with her husband and four children, ranging from three to twelve years old. If that were not enough, she also is taking courses at Cambridge College, pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Human Services with a concentration in Family Studies.

Tiffany does not want to stop her education after Cambridge College. She has her eyes set on getting her Master's in Social Work, and wants to end up in a career in education. Until then, though, she is very happy to help along the careers of the program participants here at USES.

When Tiffany was first recommended to USES, she quickly found herself at home inside the Harriet Tubman House. "The staff was so welcoming; it was overwhelming," she says. "It was the first place I went to that I felt like they genuinely cared for me.

They have been with me every step along the journey. They even gave me a recommendation letter for Cambridge College."

After she enrolled in Cambridge College and had the opportunity to give back, only one place came to mind. "It was so natural for me to want to give back here. They gave so much to me, and I just wanted to pay it forward to others," Tiffany says of her decision to intern at USES. "I am so grateful, and I love the opportunity I have here to give back."

Thank you for everything you are doing for the program participants here at USES, Tiffany. You are inspiring us all here at USES, both those who you interact with directly and those who hear of your amazing story.

The mission of the United South End Settlements is to build a strong community by improving the education, health, safety, and economic security of low-income individuals and families in Boston's historic South End/Lower Roxbury and to serve as a national model of successful neighborhood engagement.
