Greetings!
The holiday season is upon us and there is much to celebrate here at United South End Settlements (USES). As participants are finishing up their classes for this Fall session, we are already gearing up for the Winter session classes around the corner. As the new year approaches, we look forward to continuing our rich tradition of high-quality programs and services for neighbors at all stages of life. I wish a happy holiday season to you and your loved ones, and I look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood in the new year. Sincerely, Kevin Lee Hepner President & CEO

Craft Fairs Galore!
Since the last newsletter went out in mid-November, our program participants have been hard at work making crafts and holiday trinkets for the community. On the first Saturday of December, USES hosted its first ever Ornamental Craft Fair: Handmade for Less, where all items were under $50! The event was a great community success, highlighting local artists, vendors, and USES staff members who have crafting talents. There were events for everyone, as kids were also treated to an ornament-making workshop, a Mudeye Puppet Company performance, and entertainment by Royer's One Man Band. This last Friday, senior citizens in our Creative Recycling class also hosted a Christmas Recycling Fair throughout the daytime. They sold a number of ornaments, holiday decorations, and stocking stuffers, all of which were made from recycled materials in their Wednesday Creative Recycling class.

Upcoming: Brewers Helping Neighbors
Here at USES, there is a lot of excitement for the third annual Brewers Helping Neighbors (BHN) event set for February 2 here at the Harriet Tubman House. BHN is a New England craft beer tasting to benefit USES and its motto of neighbors helping neighbors. The event draws 300 young professionals living and working in and around Boston.
Last year, we were sold out and filled to capacity, so we expect no less this year. Buy your tickets online soon and reserve your spot at the event. To buy your tickets, visit www.uses.org/bhn. This year, we have six brewers confirmed, including Blue Hills Brewery, Clown Shoes Beer, Harpoon Brewing Company, Mayflower Brewery, Mercury Brewing Company, and Sam Adams Brewing Company. We are lucky to have Kennedy Elsey, from Mix 104.1, as our emcee for the night, Finally, we have live music for the night from Los Three, featuring raggae, latin & soul-ified immortal classics. If you cannot make the BHN event in February, do not fear. We have started the planning process for our annual Step on Board Celebration happening this coming June. Note: Tickets will not be sold at the door and a valid 21+ ID is required for entry. BHN 2012 is sponsored by Stuff Magazine, Bay Windows, South End News, El Mundo Newspaper, and the Bay State Banner.

Thank you from USES.
Earlier this week, several of our staff members attended an event at the Curry Student Center of Northeastern University, where we showed our heartfelt appreciation for the tireless hours, care and commitment that all our service-learning students have given throughout the years.
USES's Jerrell Cox, director of the Out-of-School Time Programs, praised Northeastern students for their reliability, dedication and professionalism in helping children with their homework and taking them to baseball games, where they received autographs from their favorite players.
Of our service-learning students, Jerrell said, "I can't express how service-learning at Northeastern has helped our program grow."
As the year is coming to a close, I wanted to thank and express my appreciation for not just the service-learning students, but the over 300 volunteers that USES hosts throughout the year. These volunteers give of themselves in order to help their most vulnerable neighbors, really taking to heart our motto of neighbors helping neighbors. Thank you for your care - we could not do it without you.

SPOTLIGHT ON: FLOUR BAKERY & CAFE
The mission of Flour is simple: They are incredibly passionate about sharing the pure pleasure that mouth-watering pastries and foods and warm hospitality can bring into your life. They love what they do and even more they love sharing it with you.
Stop by and enjoy some amazing food at Flour! Flour is located at 1595 Washington Street in Boston's South End, and has additional locations in Central Square and the Fort Point Channel.
How do you like being in the South End?
We adore being in the South End. We've watched the neighborhood grow and change and we're thrilled to be a part of it. The customers here are like family to us. Why did you move to the South End?
I love the diversity that exists here. Even now when people say it's gentrified, I still see many many different groups of people. Our goal is to bring happiness to our customers through great food and service and we think the South End customers really appreciate that. What has been your most memorable experience in the South End so far?
When we first opened 11 years ago we had no sidewalk! We were a brand new business and I still remember customers dressed up for work in their nice suits and ties crawling over planks and cement barriers and other obstacles to get to Flour. I'll always be grateful to how loyal our customer are.
