Your community center continues to spread its wings wider than ever before, making a huge difference for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender (LGBT) and allied people throughout the seven counties that make up southern Arizona.

 

 

Wingspan continues to do more with less, but we can't do it without you!

                                                                          

This year we provided more support for more LGBT people in need than ever before and the demand continues to increase each and every day. 

More With Less
 

The economy may have slowed over the last couple of years, but the need for Wingspan's programs and services did not.  Fortunately, Wingspan's eight person staff and incredible
corps of volunteers stepped up to meet the challenge head-on. 

 

The Anti-Violence Programs helped 750 victims of violence in 2010, an increase of 50% over the 500 served in 2009!  Our Eon Youth Program saw the same trend and continues to see a greater number of at-risk and homeless youth than in previous months, with the percentage of homeless youth growing from 40% each month in mid-2010 to 52% in January 2011. 

 

Last year the Eon Youth Center provided essential services to over 500 young people, including an average of 46 homeless youth per month.  The services ranged from safe sex workshops to discussion groups; peer counseling to tutoring; leadership development; HIV testing and outreach; and referral to a full range of support and referral services for youth who often don't know where they're going to find their next meal or spend the night.

Where You Come In
 

Wingspan relies on each and every supporter, no matter what form that support takes.  Meet Bob and Carol, parents of one of our community members.  Bob and Carol have been giving $10 a month faithfully since 2002.  The $120 they give each year is enough to provide:

  • 10 meals for homeless youth each month;
  • a month's worth of AVP crisis line cost for survivors of violence;
  • or three months of trainings and materials to educate service providers and organizations on the challenges faced by transgender individuals

We are still the only LGBT organization providing much needed services in southern Arizona and your support now can ensure our continued presence.

This new look was made possible by a very generous anonymous donor, and we cannot wait to show it to you! 

Our Board of Directors also recently approved additional space for the program to enhance our ability to meet the needs of our community.  Refreshments will be provided by Delectables, Athens on 4th, and Caruso's Restaurants, some of Wingspan's 4th Avenue partners.
