Greetings!
One of the best definitions for the word, "dream" that
I've come across I discovered in a book called,
How
to Dream Beyond Your Means by Dr. Bridgette
Hilliard. In it, a dream is defined as a God
inspired
hope, directive or expectation planted in one's spirit
and made visible on the canvas of one's imagination
that calls for action on the part of the dreamer. We are
not talking about the Webster's dictionary definition of
a dream-a series of images occurring during sleep-
but something larger. It's something that may seem a
bit beyond your current capabilities; something that
may seem slightly out of reach. God imbues your
spirit with a desire and as you meditate on it, it
develops into a vision that you draw to
yourself
through specific action. So while the dream may be to
start your own business, write a book or be a great
mother, the vision you have for your particular
dream
is uniquely your own.
I have observed through my own journey toward dream fulfillment that there are specific spiritual principles that will help us achieve our dreams. These principles include: Writing the vision and confessing it daily. Habbakuk 2:2 says, "Write the vision and make it plain that they may run who read it." I think it's very important to keep a journal. Keep a spiritual journal where to record all the things you believe God is revealing to you about your life, particularly about the steps you need to take, and the wisdom you need to employ, to progress on your journey toward dream fulfillment. Proverbs 18:21 talks about how death and life are in the power of the tongue. Whether you realize it or not, the words you speak-your confession-has the power to help nurture your dreams and bring them to fruition or kill them before they ever get off the ground. So instead of saying, "I'm not sure I can do this," confess the Word and say, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13). Making the proper confessions will help bring your dreams to life. Making adjustments as needed. What things might you need to change in order to bring your dream to fruition? Do you need to change things such as negative thought patterns? Bad habits? Wrong confessions? For example, do you need to get up earlier to write for an hour in the mornings if the book you dream of writing is to become a reality? Or maybe you need to minimize contact with negative people, seek out people who support your dream to help you stay encouraged and motivated. Making the proper adjustments can accelerate the process of establishing your dreams. Honoring God with your dream. Make the focus of your pursuit to glorify God. Don't get a vision & plan from God then neglect to honor Him. Deuteronomy 8:18 tells us, "And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day." Notice it says He gives you power to establish His covenant. This means we should challenge ourselves by asking, "How will God be glorified through the fulfillment of my dream?" How will my vision impact lives, help people, improve communities, enhance relationships and enrich the world? It may sound lofty, but God is a great God and He designed us in His image and for a purpose. We must walk in the greatness with which and for which we were created. Nelson Mandela powerfully illustrated this point in his 1994 inauguration speech. In it he said, "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?" Greatness is our destiny.
