Message from Rocky Tilney
Chairman of the Board | |
 Greetings fellow members,
It's a new year and a new start for many people. 2010 brought a host of difficulties and challenges, but I sense a swell of optimism this year-change is in the air. From business leaders and politicians to non-profit executives and even those looking for employment, 2011 is poised to be an exceptional year filled with hope and confidence. Last month, the Chamber, along with local non-profits and business leaders, kicked of 2011 with a celebration. Our 16th Annual Celebration of Leaders took place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Palo Alto. It was an exciting and festive evening filled with prizes, silent auction items, dinner, and cocktails. The community honored their very own volunteers who demonstrated and epitomized what it means to serve for the greater good. The Chamber, along with Mountain View Mayor, Jac Siegal and Assemblyman, Paul Fong helped us recognize the business leaders in our community. If you were not able to make it out this year, we really encourage you to join us next year as we continue on with this Mountain View tradition. Who knows, maybe you will be accepting an award in 2012!?... read more |

Katrina Apilado joined the Chamber of Commerce as our new Programs and Events Manager in January. Katrina came to the Chamber last summer as the Art & Wine intern. She worked all summer on recruiting and scheduling the hundreds of volunteers that help with the festival, learning about food vendors, proof of insurance, health permits, festival maps, giant recycling bins and wine vendors. She was very involved in planning every detail of the Volunteer Appreciation party at Shoreline Amphitheater and what an outstanding party it was. The Business Issues and Public Policy (BIPP) committee would like to thank our sponsors, Conceptus and PG&E for their generous support for the Chamber's advocacy program. The BIPP committee is instrumental in identifying key legislative issues and acting on them to promote a strong local economy and a vibrant business-friendly climate. Legislative areas of focus include: economic recovery, taxes, labor, health care, infrastructure, transportation, sustainability, education, General Plan update and various community interests. The Chamber's government affairs program offers online voters resources, e-newsletter articles on legislative positions and hosts discussion forums for chamber members, government officials and other stakeholders. Every year, a delegation team from the Chamber visits Sacramento to discuss important business issues with legislators, and solicit their support. Our members continued support allows us to offer a variety of activities to advocate for your business. To join the BIPP committee, please contact Julianna Wittmann at jwittmann@chambermv.org. |

State of the City Recap
The State of the City Address was at NASA Ames on January 25th. Honorable Mayor Jac Siegel introduced city manager Kevin Duggan. This was Kevin's last State of the City Address, as he has announced his retirement on April 2nd. Kevin has been the city manager for Mountain View for over 20 years and much of the beauty and stability of our city is a direct result of his dedication, good judgment and work.
Kevin told the group that "during these challenging economic times, we have done very well" and that revenues have stabilized. "We had an 8 million dollar deficit over the last few years and we closed the gap." read more |

2011 is a Sexual Harrassment Training Year
Article from HRCalifornia - Important reminder! Employers with 50 or more employees should be aware that 2011 is a training year for supervisors and managers. California's sexual harassment prevention training requirement took effect in 2005, and the law requires training every two years.
Employers with 50 or more employees should plan for providing this training this year to current supervisors and managers. Take note that new supervisors and managers must receive the prevention training within six months of assuming supervisory duties - even if not a training year... read more |

Fenwick's Corner: Employer Allowed to Pursue Defamation Action Against Protesting Employees
In a recent California Court of Appeals ruling, an employer was allowed to proceed with a defamation lawsuit against former employees and a community activist who publicly claimed that the employer was racist when it allegedly used social security number discrepancies as pretext to terminate its older Hispanic and Latino workers. In Overhill Farms, Inc. v. Lopez, the IRS had conducted a revenue and payroll audit of Overhill, and, based on the results, informed the company that 231 of its employees had provided invalid social security numbers, which could result in... read more |

Leadership Mountain View Reaches Beyond "Our City"
The theme for Leadership Mountain View's January program day, "Our City," included not only local elected officials, department heads and committee members, but those on the County and State level as well.
The jam-packed morning began with City Manager Kevin Duggan's overview of how Mountain View works. His presentation was especially poignant as Duggan, who has been a regular fixture with LMV, will be retiring in April. "He's always excellent!" one program member shared. "What a loss to the City when he retires."
Evan Low, Senior Field Representative for Assemblymember Paul Fong, next spoke with the class about what the role of an assemblymember... read more |
