Message from Rocky Tilney
Chairman of the Board | |

Greetings fellow members,
Two years ago I was honored with the 2008 Small Business of the Year Award by the Chamber of Commerce Mountain View. When I reflect back to that night I can hardly remember going up on stage and receiving that award, but what I do remember is all of the other honorees that night; the myriad of community leaders, non-profit organizations, and of course, the business community. It was an exciting evening and a great opportunity to see the many diverse organizations that make up the Mountain View community being honored.
I'd like to invite you to join us this year as we honor and celebrate our community leaders at the 16th Annual Celebration of Leaders Awards on January 14th in Palo Alto. To register, go to: http://16thcol.eventbrite.com/
Viva Italia! The Chamber of Commerce along with Collette Vacations is offering a 10-day trip to beautiful Tuscany in March 2011. Space is limited to 15 participants, so sign up now or contact David Stevens at dave@chambermv.org for more information. In the meantime, I want to wish everyone a very happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year! Best regards, Rocky Tilney

Chamber seeks input from local businesses on proposed High Speed Rail Station in Mountain View
The City of Mountain View is working with the California High Speed Rail Authority on a proposal to build a bullet train station (with three different proposed station design alternatives) in Mountain View. City staff has been studying the topic and is currently waiting for the release of the environmental impact report. The anticipated release of this document is early next year. The purpose of this survey is to seek input from local businesses about this topic before the city makes a decision on the proposal. Survey results will be shared with, and considered by city staff. Your participation is important as many businesses have not given any feedback to the city on this topic.

Why bother giving performance warnings to "at-will" employees?
On more than one occasion, clients have asked me why, when employment is at will (meaning that it can be terminated with or without cause or prior notice), an employer should give written warnings about unsatisfactory performance and, as part of that process, obtain the employee's signature.
Although not required by law, a written notice of performance deficiencies followed by an opportunity to improve serves a useful employee-relations purpose, i.e., once given the warning, the employee is... read more |
