Greetings!
With this cold winter weather and snow it is
unbelievable that we are only 14 weeks away from
the Capital
City Half Marathon and Commit to Be Fit 5k.
This year, in order to provide the ultimate experience
for all participants, partners and volunteers we are
again limiting the half marathon field to 5,000 and the
Commit to Be Fit 5k Field to 1,500. This event sold out
last year and this year we are well over 100% of where
we were last year at this time. The earlier you register,
the more money you will save.
Register Today and start your journey with
us.
If you are not from Columbus or have not had a
chance to experience it recently, you need to
come take the best tour of this "sports town" on two
feet. Scarborough Sports Marketing, a joint venture
between Arbitron and the Nielsen company, recently
declared Columbus, Ohio the "Number one sports
town in the United States". The race starts and
finishes in the heart of downtown in the Arena
District.
Don't forget to check out the Capital City Half Marathon
page on Facebook.

Legacy Running - Nate's journey.
Come Create Some Family Traditions With Us.
My 12 year old son Nate got a break in his travel
hockey schedule and we were
again able to join the 300+ people in the MIT Training
Program. We joined Tim Flahavin, the owner of
Fleet Feet Sports Columbus and 30 or 40 others in
the 10 minute
pace group and went out on the path for a 4 mile run. It
was one of those times where I had a "that is what
this is all about" moment. We went out with the group
for the first two miles and then turned around and ran
the last two miles just he and I. We talked a little
about some issues he was having at school, hockey,
girls, and then nothing at all. Being able to participate
along with him makes running special, and we have
not been able to create these type of moments driving
to a hockey rink.
It was a bond between my father and I 25 years ago
and it is now a similar bond is being created between
Nate and I. At about mile 3, he asked if we could race
again at the end of the run. This has become
a "tradition" between us he really likes. He struggled
a bit up the hill at the end, but when we were about
400 yards away from the finish he looked at me and
said "Let's go". We sprinted like no one was watching
us. When we were done and were catching our
breath, we briefly touched hands and did not say a
word. We smiled, got some Gatorade then headed off
to hockey practice....

Treadmill Workouts To Keep Life Interesting.
With all the snow and ice on the ground many of us
have been doing our workouts indoors. This past
week, in addition to some basic 30 minute running
workouts, I did some high intensity interval training on
the treadmill and actually had a lot of fun (relatively
speaking).
Our Partners at Active have helped us with some great
treadmill
training tips.
If you have any treadmill training tips send them along
we would be happy to share them.

Keep Running There is Fresh Hot Donatos Pizza at the Finish.
Respect the Pizza!
Donatos Pizza continues as a proud partner and a
large reason for the incredible success of the Capital
City Half Marathon and Commit to Be Fit 5k. Fresh Hot
Donatos Pizza at the Finish Line has been a tradition
since 2004 and continues in 2009. Don't forget to
check out the now famous Donatos
Water stop near Mile 6!
When Jim Grote founded Donatos back in 1963, he
did it with only $1,300 dollars in his pocket and a
simple philosophy: "To make the best pizza and to
treat others the way I would like to be treated." Today
this philosophy is still the driving force behind
everything they do at Donatos-both in their
restaurants
and the communities they serve. As a result, their four
cultural cornerstones of Live, Love, Laugh and Learn
is the thread that weaves through the very fabric of
what Donatos stands for.

Go Green with Capital City.
Shed Some Light On It!
The Capital City Half Marathon continues its "quest" to
become one of the "greenest" events in the
country. Each week, this newsletter will include an
update or a tip on how we can all make a difference.
Switching from incandescent bulbs to compact
fluorescent lights (CFLs) will cut your dependence on
energy and save you money. CFLs provide three to
four times more energy savings over comparable
incandescents. If every household in America
switched to efficient bulbs in only one room, power
plants would release one trillion pounds less CO2,
the major greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere each
year. For more information on CFL's Check this Out
For more "green ideas", check out the
the City of Columbus'
Greenspot
Campaign.

What's Your Reason?
I run because I CAN!
Every Newsletter we will print one of your "Reasons".
This week's reason comes to us from Deanna
Dunlap of Galena, Ohio.
I run because I CAN.
I run in memory of a friend, Janet Devaty, an avid
runner, who was tragically killed while running. Just
an "oversight" while running ended her life. She was
running at dusk and waiting for a truck to pass by her
so she could get back to running. Tragically, she
didn't see that he had a flatbed attached to his truck
and she ran out too soon after the truck passed by.
I run because I CAN.
I run because I have a friend that has a 3 year old
diagnosed with brain cancer. Matthew may never be
able to run, but I CAN.
I run because I CAN.

Be An Athlete That Finishes for a Cause!
Find out more about Team in Training this winter
Still on the fence about lacing up for this year's Capital
City Half Marathon? Would running for a cause inspire
you a little more? Better yet, would running with the
knowledge that you WILL complete the 13.1-mile
course throughout downtown Columbus make such a
decision easier?
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In
Training is the world's largest endurance sports
training program. Since 1988, more than 380,000
volunteer participants have helped raise more than
$900 million.
By helping to raise funds for leukemia, lymphoma and
myeloma research and patient services, you'll receive
personalized fitness training by certified coaches,
training clinics and a better introduction into a healthy
habit that will last a lifetime.
You'll train with a team of about 100 athletes in
preparation for the May 2 event. In 2008, Team in
Training participants at the Capital City Half Marathon
combined to raise more than $100,000 for blood
cancer research.
We'll be holding information meetings throughout
Columbus this winter. Feel free to contact Andrea
Zelinski at 614-476-7194, ext. 232 or e-mail her at
andrea.zelinski@lls.org if you'd like to learn more
about our program. Or Check out the Website
