Like Father Like Son.
The apples do not fall far from the trees.
If you followed last year's newsletters, you know that
my father was a marathoner back in the "tight nylon
shorts" days of the 70s and 80s. He brought me to run
my first race when I was 9. Since that time I have run
in hundreds of different events and I am sure that
those experiences with him influenced me to spend a
lot less time practicing law and a lot more time
producing running and walking events.
I have been blessed with 3 physically fit sons who are
now 14, 12, and 9. Nate, my 12 year old, has worked
at a number of our races and has run a number of our
Four Mile events. This year he wants to train for and
complete the Capital City Half Marathon.
Together we will get fit for new shoes and winter
training gear at Fleet Feet Sports, join the MIT
Training program, and train along with all of you.
Nate is a "thick" 12 year old. He is a strong kid who
plays football, travel hockey and baseball. Like many
7th graders he is an expert XBOX player and a pretty
good junk food eater. His travel hockey schedule has
all of us eating out a lot more than we should. He is
excited to work on his diet as well as his fitness. We
start on Saturday with MIT. I will report on his progress
in this newsletter.
Do you run or walk with your kids? Are they as
active as you want them to be? Email me and let me
know any tips or thoughts you have to keep Nate
motivated over the winter months.

Go Green with Capital City.
Put a Cap on Bottled Water.
The Capital City Half Marathon continues its "quest" to
become one of the "greenest" events in the
country. Each week, this newsletter will include an
update or a tip on how we can all make a difference.
Together we buy over 31.2 billion liters of bottled water
in a year. That constitutes almost 900,000 tons of
plastic which took over 17 million barrels of oil
to produce. In addition, eight out of every ten plastic
water bottles used in the United States become
garbage.
Before you reach for that next bottle of water, visit your
local running specialty store and check out the
selection of reusable water bottles you can take on
your next run or walk. Brands like CamleBak, Nalgene
and Klean Kanteen have flooded the market with
these stylish, eco-friendly BPA free bottles.

Commit to Be Fit Columbus!
Obesity is an epidemic and a public health crisis.
Columbus is leading the nation in changing the
fitness habits of its citizens. Mayor Coleman and
10TV's Andrea Cambern are challenging our
community to "Commit to be Fit" with them.
This is a "movement" where every able-bodied citizen
in Columbus will run or walk the Capital City Half
Marathon or Commit to Be Fit 5K
(3.1 miles) by 2012. For more information, come check this out.
