Greetings!
Coming back from Arizona this week, it was tough to
find the motivation to run outside. However, on
Thursday afternoon I met up with Dave
Litzke and Doug Chivington and we ran the Cinco De
Mayo course from Corazon and around the
Glacier Ridge Metro Park. Dave has lost 20 pounds
preparing for the Capital City Half Marathon. Doug and
Dave launched the Courage To Start Corporate
Wellness program with
John "the Penguin" Bingham and Coach Jenny
Hadfield. You will
see Doug, Dave and over 200 of their associates out
at the event this year.
We are well into March Madness and even without the
Buckeyes, it has been a fun tournament to watch. I
spent Friday afternoon with Steve Shepard, Bonnie
and their team from Bank of America watching the
games. Even with all the excitement of the
tournament, I saw Steve back at his training on
Saturday afternoon. Before meeting up with Steve, I
spent the morning with our operations
team finalizing the runner recovery area and reviewing
the tweaks to the half marathon course.
See the course map here.
On Saturday morning my dog and I ran outside
through nickel size snowflakes. About halfway
through Chipper, with his face full of snow, stopped
and looked at me with that "what the heck are we
doing look". I took him off
the leash and let him run around catching
snowflakes. While he had a lot of fun, we are both
ready for spring, and doing our long run on Sunday in
the sunshine was a nice change for both of us. It is
amazing how much thinking I can get done while I
run. This week I am going to spend a lot of
time "thinking".
On Easter Sunday, I spent some time talking with my
younger sister and for the first time I realized that she
is not just my little sister but a very successful mother,
runner and athlete. This year, at 36 years old and with
two young daughters, she qualified for the Boston
Marathon. She is also training for her first triathlon
and is considering a 50 mile ultra marathon in the
next year. Running is something my entire family
shares and it is an important part of my father's
legacy. I spent some time rereading all of your
amazing stories about how running and walking has
become an important part of your
lives. Check out your stories. This week I have
added links to both John and Jenny's blogs for this
event. Make sure you "blog" a bit with them.
To create the ultimate experience for
everyone we are limiting our field to the first 5000
entrants. Anyone registered by March 31 will be
guaranteed a spot in the event. After April 1 we
will
leave online registration open until April 9 or when the
cap is reached, whichever is first to occur.
Register Now!
You are receiving this email as your have either
participated in one of our events or are already
registered for this event. To confirm that you are
registered you may check here.
I look forward to seeing you in your training.
If you see me and Chipper running on the paths,
come join us........David

Penguin Inspiration
Running Ugly!
No one's training program goes exactly as planned.
There's no way to know this early on how your body or
your life will respond to the training.
Be ready at any point to rethink your goals for the day,
the week, the month, and the race. The greatest
discipline is the ability to respond and change to the
inevitable ups and downs of a long distance training
program.

Training Tips from Coach Jenny
Race Day Strategy
With three weeks to go, now is a good time to think
about your race day strategy. The single biggest
mistake people make is to go out too fast too soon on
race day. There are two successful strategies for
pacing on race day. One is to pace evenly throughout
the race start to finish. The other, take the first half of
the race a little slower (1-3 minutes) than the second
half to conserve energy. Avoid going out to quickly. It
will zap your energy and leave you with lead legs for
the finishing miles. The ultimate goal is to look good
and strong for that finish line photo!
First-timers walk through the water stations. Pick up
water or Gatorade Endurance Formula at the first few
tables of the station and walk through the station
making sure
that you're getting fluids "in" your rather than "on" you.
It also helps to look the volunteer in the eyes and
point so they know you are taking fluids from them.
Remember to thank them for being out there!
Dig deep! Long distance running challenges the body
as well as the mind. Focus on positive thoughts and
make smaller, more digestible goals for the race. You
can break it up by geographic locations on the map or
by miles, either way it will help you mentally. If you find
yourself struggling, set shorter goals and run to the
next street lamp and mile marker and reward yourself
with a power-walk break.
Use the geometry you thought you would never use!
Avoid going the long way around corners in the race
(on the outer part of the turn). This can add up to a
quarter mile to the race!! Instead, anticipate the turns
and set your self up to take the turn at 45 degrees
from the middle to inner part of the lane. Anticipate
the turns and take them efficiently. Avoid zigzagging
around people as this can exhaust you.
Be flexible with what the day brings. You could wake
up and have the most incredible race where
everything goes right. Or...you can wake up and have
a day that challenges you at every turn. It could be
unseasonably warm or cold. In which case, everyone
will slow down to finish. The key is to get out there
and do the best you can on the day.

Saturn Is the Official Vehicle of The Capital City Half Marathon!
Meet the New Saturn!
On Tuesday, I picked up my new 2008 Saturn Outlook AWD XR from
Will and
his team at Saturn
Southeast. What a fantastic vehicle.
From the 3.6L V6 engine, to the dual skyscape
sunroofs, to the
touch screen navigation with rearview camera
system,
to the DVD with cordless headphones, it is simply the
best crossover SUV I have ever driven. Even if you are
not watching movies with the kids in the back, the
back seats have plenty of leg room for adults and
room for all of the hockey bags.
