A Message from the IPGA Board of Directors
A Message from the IPGA Board Members:

John Bruce, Eric Craymer, Nanci Erkert(Secretary), Phil Graybeal, Jim Hyatt, and Sue Stratton-Radwan (Chair)

With the intent to create a stronger and more consistent link with the ownership of the International Policy GovernanceŽ Association, the 2009-2010 Board of Directors is committed to keeping you informed of the progress and news of the IPGA board over this coming year.   We have an ambitious annual plan of work for this year and we want to hear from you along the way.
Culture Changes of the IPGA Board

In 2008, there were many lessons learned by the Board as was disclosed during the Montreal conference.  In order to assure that we integrate the lessons learned into our practices, the board is taking several steps to build an intentional culture that will support the health of IPGA.

The first decision we made was to establish a strong connection among the new board.  Because we did not have a contested election process this year, the new board had an opportunity to meet during the conference and discuss together how we wanted the culture of the board to evolve this year.

The second decision we made was to hold a face to face meeting shortly after election.  In years past, the first face to face meeting was held in December after May elections.  This year, we decided to meet on August 26-27 in Detroit.  The meeting was extremely fruitful, allowing us to create the priorities for our annual plan of work, gain understanding of how each of us approaches monitoring and agree on evaluative process standards for accepting monitoring reports from our CEO as reasonable and in compliance.   We also spent quality time discussing how we can intentionally cultivate our sense of group responsibility.  As a result of that discussion, we made a commitment to disclose underlying beliefs and values as we discuss issues, as well as to focus on inquiry to gain a sense of mutual insights from the perspectives we each hold.

A critical conversation was focused on Ownership Linkage.  The 2009-2010 Board is absolutely committed to creating systematic linkage with our owners far beyond gathering input at the Annual General Meeting.  We want to keep you informed of the critical conversations we are having internally and with our owners.   We recognize that we must create an environment that builds trust and examines values that our policies must be based on.
2009-2010
Annual Plan of Work for the IPGA Board

The key priorities of our board's work this year are:

Gaining clarity about who our owners are
.  Leading up to and during the Annual General Meeting, there were deep conversations about the breadth of our ownership.  Further exploration is required to fully understand and define "IPGA ownership".

Gaining clarity about who our targeted beneficiaries ought to be
.   Many have criticized the IPGA Ends as being consultant-focused, wondering where the practitioner benefits are.  This expressed concern from owners is causing the Board to re-think Ends completely.  As a result, the Board has committed to the following objective:
By July 2010, we will have explored ends issues appropriately so that we can re-evaluate and define IPGA ends with full confidence.  The process we will use is to test shared values and seek answers to our identified questions.
As a result of this commitment, the Board will be initiating a series of questions that will be communicated systematically throughout this year.  We ask your input to help us understand what is and is not important for the future of IPGA from the value system of our owners.

Gaining confidence that our fiscal house is in order
.  Monitoring rigorously and systematically is absolutely at the forefront of the board's consciousness.  Since the conference, we have conducted direct inspections and evaluated internal monitoring reports according to our very aggressive monitoring schedule.  Our CEO is learning to deliver comprehensive interpretations and monitoring data that are consistent with the demands of the model.
Practitioner Opportunity for Appointment to the Board

Due to the resignation of Steve Winninger from the board (see sidebar), the Board is considering its option to appoint a new board member to replace Steve.  Board members must be Academy participants, and there are many practitioners who have attended the Academy.    If this describes you, we invite you to contact Sue Stratton-Radwan with your interest by October 31.  This year's board meeting schedule will include monthly contacts including two face to face meetings in the balance of this term of service.  Telephone conference calls are 90 minutes in length and held at mutually agreeable dates.  Face to face meetings are currently scheduled in December in Toronto and in July in Las Vegas at the 2010 conference site.  Current policy states that board member's reasonable expenses to attend meetings are reimbursable.

At this point in our history, we guarantee that this will be a great learning experience for any graduate of the Academy.

Board Member Resigns

As many of you know, elections were held at the IPGA's Annual General Meeting on July 12 in Montreal.   In August, we received a resignation from one of our newly elected members.  A letter of resignation was received by the board on August 11 from Steve Winninger.  At our request, Steve offers this note to you:

"With regret I have resigned my position as a Board Member of IPGA.  I have found the needs of my business (running a Credit Union) are such that it is impossible for me to devote the time necessary to be an effective IPGA Board Member.  I continue to believe in IPGA and will support it in the future."

The Board accepts with regret Steve's decision.     The Board recognizes that with Steve's departure, the current board is consultant-heavy.  We find this situation unacceptable and have agreed to use this opportunity to seek a qualified practitioner to fill the open position by appointment of the Board.
