Policy GovernanceŽ Expansion: Moving to Jordan

In Jordan, three women's organizations are practicing Policy GovernanceŽ with the assistance of Susan Stratton-Radwan, IPGA chair, and Rana Akhal, principal of MEDAL consulting.  The Canadian International Development Agency is funding this project which is called "Leading by Good Governance."  This project is being led by the Arab Women's Organization (AWO), an NGO dedicated to addressing gender issues. AWO leads a network of 42 small NGOs in Jordan, and two of these have chosen to participate in the project.

Special challenges for the consultants of this project include the translation of Policy GovernanceŽ language into Arabic.  There are many words that do not translate easily, such as "imprudent," a core term in Executive Limitations.  The translated policy template (currently in its sixth draft) is available on the IPGA website.  The consultants expect many more adjustments to clarify the language to the Arab world.  With the documents available in Arabic, the entire Arab world will have access to understanding the concept of Policy GovernanceŽ.

The three organizations participating in this project are approaching the model from varying starting points.  One has a very strong CEO, one has a designated CEO and board members that are present daily, and the last has a strong board with a CEO that has not been delegated the usual authority.  The 12 month period of coaching and mentoring to facilitate the installation and practice of Policy GovernanceŽ will further reveal each organization's special needs.  This period will encompass the installation of Policy GovernanceŽ as well as a results-based strategic plan.

While the organizations differ structurally, the boards are all composed of highly educated women.  As of July 200 they have established these global Ends:
  • Women empowered by security, psychological health and the courage to play a vital role in the community. (AWO Ends, adopted July 2009)
  • Women of the Mafraq Governorate are economically empowered so that they have the possibility to live an empowered life. (Arab Woman Society of Mafraq)
  • The quality of life of women and children improves through legal, economic and social empowerment. (Zein Al-Sharraf Society of Tafileh)

We look forward to hearing more from Susan Stratton-Radwan about the unfolding of this project and the expansion of the reach of Policy GovernanceŽ.
