The 7th Annual IPGA Conference Board Power: The Ends Are The Beginning
How can the Policy GovernanceŠ Model change your organization?
According to Bill Burns, CAE, Executive Director for the Association for Play Therapy, the model makes all the difference. "From a governance perspective, our board no longer micro-manages management and staff. It instead focuses upon the long-range outcomes or impacts that we should produce for our stakeholders, monitoring the performance of the organization (and its CEO), and building a stronger sense of community among stakeholders. All three of these focuses did not exist to such a degree just five years ago. "From a stakeholder perspective, members have had to learn an entirely new vocabulary and the new roles, responsibilities, and relationships between our board, CEO, and members. We sponsor an annual online academy which orients them to our new system of governance and how they might prosper within it. They now participate more effectively on our committees by utilizing their clinical expertise and allowing me to contribution my organizational management expertise. "From a management perspective, I have never labored in a more creative and empowered environment during my 34-year association management career. The model allows me to aggressively roam within my proscribed corral, pushes me to engage in many more discussions with volunteer and paid staff than ever before, and may cause me to delay retirement for at least another 50 years. "Overall, our organization and its people are much more nimble, ambitious, and trusting of each other. Despite tough economic times, our organization produced a record year in membership numbers and revenues, exceeded our net profit objective by nearly $65K, and increased our customer loyalty score by 12.7%. We attribute this is previous successes to the better alignment between expertise and assigned responsibilities and the greater degree of flexibility allowed by the (Policy GovernanceŠ) model!"
Thanks to Bill for the insight. Don't miss out on the conference and learn how you can change your organization for the better! |
