Power of Numbers

This month, ESR will be raffling off several display copies of The Power of Numbers.  This math and social studies curriculum integrates goals and strategies consistent with NCTM standards.

Welcome to ESR's November E-News!  I can't believe that Thanksgiving is almost here; I hope that you and your students have a wonderful and safe holiday with your families.  And another holiday season is right around the corner!  Here's what's going on at ESR:

New Resource from TRUCE
Teachers Resisting Unhealthy Children's Entertainment has created an exciting new resource: The Infant & Toddler Play, Toys & Media Action Guide. TRUCE created this guide because of their concern about the rapid escalation in marketing high tech toys and media to infants and toddlers. TRUCE wants to help parents understand the problem and help them to promote quality play for their very young children. 
 
The TRUCE Steering Committee has also updated the TRUCE Toy Action Guide.  Always a good resource to help parents and teachers deal thoughtfully with the December holiday toy/gift-buying season.

No Name Calling Week 2010
Mark your calendars!  No Name Calling Week 2010 will take place from January 25th-29th.

No Name-Calling Week is an annual week of educational activities aimed at creating safer schools by making bullying, harassment, and name-calling unacceptable through public education campaigns that motivate students and educators to take school-based action around the problem of name-calling and verbal harassment.

Legacy and Lessons
The Legacy and Lessons of the Civil Rights Movement is an integrated three-part educational program for high school juniors and seniors. The program includes the Legacy Essay Contest, Legacy Lesson Plan, and Legacy Screenings and Discussion Guide. These are three complementary projects designed to provide teachers with resources to bring African-American history to life for their students. Legacy and Lessons seeks to stimulate high school students to take a serious look at what it means to be black or white in America today, how this has and hasn't changed since the days of the Civil Rights Movement, and what the lessons are for how to further the quest for genuine racial equity.
