This Month at Setnor

October in Syracuse means apple picking, the air becoming just a bit crisper, and the leaves beginning to turn. The fall semester is in full swing with marching band performances, ensemble concerts, solo recitals and lectures filling the school's calendar. Please join us! We particularly look forward to welcoming parents and siblings to campus for Family Weekend, October 5-7, and will enjoy welcoming alumni back to campus next month during Orange Central, November 8-11. Keep abreast of what is happening in Setnor by "liking" us on Facebook and joining your departmental Facebook group. Links to these pages are provided in the column to the left. Please help us spread the word about the great things happening at Setnor by forwarding this eNewsletter to any friends, alumni, and concertgoers who may be interested.

Setnor's Saxophone Ensemble to perform on Says You!

The Saxophone Ensemble, directed by Dr. Ronald Caravan, will be the featured musical guest at the November 17th taping of the hit show, Says You!  The taping will take place at SU's Hendricks Chapel at 7:00 PM. Says You! is an independently produced show that is carried on many NPR stations.  It has a national audience in the millions and is carried in states as far away as Alaska and Hawaii and as close to home as New York.  Says You! is a game show that pits three-person teams of editors, producers, writers and TV/radio personalities against one another in a battle of word games, brainteasers and expert bluffing.  The Saxophone Ensemble will perform before, during and after the show.

If you would like to learn more about the show, or attend the taping, more information can be found at www.saysyou.net/tapings/.

Alumni News

Kaitlyn Moore BS '10 was the first student to complete a dual major in Recording and Allied Entertainment Industries through Setnor's Bandier Program and Television, Radio and Film from the Newhouse School.  She gained industry experience through internships with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Universal Music Group and RPM Management in Nashville, and Sony/ATV while studying abroad in London.  She was also involved with the student chapter of the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association and Women in Communications. Kaitlyn worked on freelance projects in digital marketing, social media and web development in Nashville after graduation. She joined Borman Entertainment in November 2011 taking over fan engagement and social media for one of their acclaimed country acts. Kaitlyn says the experience gained from both Setnor's Bandier Program and the Newhouse School gave her confidence and knowledge in different aspects of the industry and helped her land a job in a competitive field.

Faculty Feature

Dr. Andrew Waggoner, professor of composition, performed extensively this summer, including engagements with his wife, cellist Caroline Stinson, and their group, Open End. Waggoner was composer-in-residence at the Rudersdal Sommerkoncerter festival near Copenhagen and had works premiered there and in Strasbourg, France.  His fall premieres include a piece based on a cautionary tale from the Histories of Herodotus, performed by the Finger Lakes Chamber Ensemble with narration by SU drama faculty member Elizabeth Ingram, and the October 14th premiere of Concerto for Guitar, composed for Setnor's instructor of guitar Dr. Kenneth Meyer, and Ithaca-based Ensemble X, conducted by Steven Stucky, at Cornell University. Concerto for Guitar will have its Syracuse premiere on October 30th, with Meyer as soloist and the Society for New Music conducted by Cynthia Johnston-Turner. November will include performances in New York with Ensemble Nordlys of Denmark and a new work Waggoner composed for them called Summer.

Student Spotlight

Zoe Johnson, soprano, is pursuing a Master of Music degree in performance. Zoe is originally from Los Angeles and matriculated in the Setnor School of Music to continue studying with her voice instructor, Dr. Kathleen Roland-Silverstein. She is a featured performer and singer in the film "Pearl", directed by Mary Lambert. The film will be shown at the Sitges Festival International de Cinema Fantastic de Catalonia this October. She became involved in the movie "Pearl" when the director heard her sing the role of Cunegonde in a production of "Candide." Zoe said the best part about playing Pearl in the film was telling the love story through music.
