This Month at Setnor

Welcome to Setnor's monthly eNewsletter. Each issue features alumni, faculty, and current students, as well as upcoming events. Keep abreast of what is happening between issues by visiting our newly designed website and "liking" our Facebook page. Alumni and students will also want to join their departmental Facebook groups, listed in the column to the left. Please help us spread the word about the great things happening at Setnor by forwarding this to any friends, alumni, and concert goers who may be interested. We have a wonderful season planned and look forward to greeting you in Setnor auditorium!

SU Womens ChoirHonoring 125 Years of 'Women in Song'

Setnor will honor 125 years of 'Women in Song' at Syracuse University with three performances this year under the direction of Dr. Barbara M. Tagg. We will launch the celebration with the 10th Invitational Women's Choir Festival on October 27, where guest conductor Doreen Rao will lead over two hundred singers from six women's choirs from Upstate NY and Canada. On March 23, the Setnor Women's Choir will host the College of William and Mary Women's Chorus for a joint concert. The yearlong celebration will culminate with an April 20 concert featuring a multi-media historical journey including period repertoire, highlights of past conductors, and interesting historical facts. Guest artists will include organist Kola Owalabi, trumpet soloist Gabriel DiMartino, former conductor Lon Beery, and a ukulele, guitar and mandolin ensemble under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Meyer. Women's Choir alumnae are invited to join the current choir for the finale.

Alumni News

Three recent music education alumni, Mary DeMauro, BM '11, MM '12, Anna Palsma, BM '10 and Stephen Salem, BM '10 will begin teaching this month in the same school district from which they graduated, the Liverpool Central School District. Salem, who will be teaching at the high school, says it's a chance for him to give back to the community that supported him. Palsma, who will be a band director at Soule Road Middle School, says she will bring innovative techniques she has learned across the country to help her new students. And DeMauro, who will teach at the middle and elementary school levels, stated that she might not have attended SU or studied music in college and gone on to teach, if not for Liverpool's music program.  Thus, three friends, who began a successful journey in their school music program, now return to Liverpool to inspire and educate the next generation of outstanding CNY musicians.

Kathleen is also on the board of directors of the National Opera Association and is the editor of their newsletter, NOA Notes. In her spare time, she is a karate and Russian kettlebells enthusiast and just tries to keep up with her 11-year-old daughter, Emma, who is one belt higher than mom!
Student Spotlight

Max Gredinger, a senior in the Bandier Program, has been managing the band
Aer for two years. Aer gained traction in October with the success of "What
You Need." They played the Bamboozle Festival in May and then went on a 35-date national tour, which included a number of sell-out shows, to promote their album, "The Bright Side", which rose to #1 on iTunes album charts upon release and made Billboard's Hot 100. In the fall, Aer is going on a 48-date "The Bright Side Tour" with Yonas. Max credits the Bandier Program with having helped him develop the skills he needs to be successful, such as working with his team, consisting of a booking agent, business manager, creative director, tour manager, and merchandise company; creating strategic partnerships; handling day to day responsibilities; and running Aer's record label needs through his own company, Hold My Coat.
