Down The Garden Path
with Joanne Shaw
Greetings!
Joanne Shaw

Welcome to the first day of summer! There is still plenty of time to plant and improve your garden and most of all to enjoy it. I have been asked quite a bit in the last 2 weeks if it is now too late to do something to our gardens. The weather is great and the garden centers are still stocked and many continue to have fresh plant material arriving. So keep enjoying the garden season, it always seems too short.

Welcome also to a new look to my newsletter and my website. I hope you like it. I really believe that everyone can have a beautiful well maintained yard and I keep thinking of ways where I can help you do just that.
Another tool for helping my readers is the addition of a blog on my website. Please visit often for timely tips and articles to help you to continue to maintain your garden.

Please visit the seasonal tip section of the website for things you should be doing now in the garden.

Garden Tour season is upon us and a great way to look at other gardens for more ideas. For a list of tours in your area or an area you are planning to visit this summer, check out this website.

I hope you enjoy the article below on my tour of the gardens in Rosedale.

Enjoy!

Warm regards,

TIP
How Does Your Garden Grow?

Lilacs had a lovely long season this year thanks to the weather.

Here is picture of how to trim off the old blooms without damaging next years flower.

I do recommend pruning off 1/3 of the shrub, like mentioned in previous newsletters, once the lilac has reached a good size (at least 3 years old).

A Peek Inside Rosedale Gardens

I had the opportunity to attend the Toronto Botanical Garden tour last week. This year the gardens were in the Rosedale neighborhood. What an opportunity it was to see some mature and well established gardens and to see some newer and updated gardens in the area as well.

Also some interesting hardscaping.  As many people ooh'd and aah'd at some of the plants, I couldn't help notice the steps, garden edging or water features.  There really is a lot that goes into creating a great landscape and as much as I love the plants, you can't forget about some of the hardscaping details.
Rosedale1
The attention to detail here, the stone walkway and wall match the stone on the house.

Rosedale2
Simple straight lines of the walkway, match the straight lines of the garden.
Rosedale3
Dated walkway updated with natural stone edging.
Rosedale4
In addition to being an attractive feature, this wall also allowed better use of their sloped front yard ...

Rosedale5
...and accommodated the existing grates in the sidewalk.

I hope you enjoyed the glimpse of Rosedale and can see how hardscaping elements can help take your garden to a new level.
