Year End 2011 Newsletter

Greetings!

Where did the year go?  Many of us find that it flies by and now we are in the usual end-of-year rush related to family, business, and holiday plans.  With this in mind, let us help you finish strong in the finance arena.

We have a terrific team ready to focus on all your year-end needs.  Just a few examples follow in the areas of tax planning and employee management.
Our Top 10

From the SH&A Team

Year-end tax planning does not occur in a vacuum.  It has to take in all the very specific and personal details of your tax situation with the aim of minimizing taxes to the greatest extent possible.

There are literally hundreds of ideas and many apply in only limited situations.  For quick consideration, this Top 10 list applies to many of our clients and friends and can be quite impactful in savings:

  1. For businesses: accelerate expenses and defer income is the name of the game.  Make sure your cash flow can support this and weigh the time value of money in the decision.
  2. It has been a tough year for many financially in the stock market.  Consider a call to us and your investment advisor.  We'll discuss a tax-swap to capture or use losses or to talk about converting an IRA to a Roth IRA.
  3. Kids are expensive.  Why not take a credit?  Education expenses could be eligible for a tax deduction or tax credit.  Contributions to an Ohio 529 plan are deductible on the Ohio personal income tax return.  There are also special rules for businesses who hire their children to work in the business.
  4. Ohio residents can benefit from the new Business Investment Credit.
  5. Bonus, Bonus: Buy an asset and get bonus depreciation. 2011 is the last chance for 100% Bonus.
  6. Sock it away: Establish a retirement plan or max out the current plan in place.
  7. Give it away: Especially if it is an appreciated asset, it makes a great gift to a charity.
  8. Stop or wait: Installment sales can defer taxable gains.
  9. Find another one:  Like-kind exchanges can also defer taxable gains.
  10. Research it:  Take a credit for research and development projects.

Please note that each of these great ideas requires careful planning and compliance.  Let us help you do it properly. Feel free to contact us to discuss any of these tips further and to review your situation.

The end of the calendar year brings many things to the front of our minds.  This time of year business owners are often thinking about some of these questions related to employees:

  • How can I slow health care and Workers' Comp. expenses?
  • How can I provide rewards and incentives without going broke?
  • How do I reduce overtime costs without getting in trouble?
  • Can I really replace a poor performer without creating problems?
  • What kind of background info can I get so I don't hire a headache?
These issues are important especially at the end of a year when many want to make changes effective for the new calendar year.  Many businesses also find this a great time to update their employee handbooks or Policy and Procedure manuals.

We are experts in Human Resources. Frequently we are engaged to help with day-to-day issues where businesses do not need, or cannot afford, a human resource professional on staff.

Contact us for assistance and to talk.
There is much to do in the remaining weeks of the year.  If you need a partner who understands your business and has the expertise and capability to get you through, we can help you move forward.  Here's to a successful end to 2011.

Sincerely,

Your Team at
