Save Capital and Historic Value
Greetings!

Repairs can be made to structures that would ordinarily be replaced. Along with being much less costly than replacement clients will value the consideration given to the history of their structures. The following example shows how repairing an item such as a column at Emory University can be done. This particular repair saved Emory lots of money when replacement was simply not in the budget AND historic value needed to be preserved.
Rotted column base
Rotted column base

Older buildings have multiple pieces of rotten or damaged bases, mill work or moldings that can no longer be purchased and are too expensive to replace.
Base template
A template or mold can be made (similar to a tooth from a dentist) so that as the impression of rotten wood or damage is removed, you have the exact contour or shapes of all the trim pieces and bottom base.

Wood filler to base
After removing all damaged areas, the voids are filled with a wood filler and shaped to the exact original by using the mold we made. To smooth out the imperfections, an exterior, sandable compound is applied and then sanded thoroughly.

After the repairs are completed, the whole surface must be primed with an oil primer to prevent moisture from getting to the repaired areas. The final coat can be an acrylic exterior paint. On this project we refabricated 4 column bases and saved our client a tremendous amount of money as well as preserved historic value. The 50 year old rotted column bases look like new.
