Changing a Common Misconception

Dear Friends,

We have heard from quite a lot of people lately, "Why are your expenses so high?"  "Isn't all your food donated?"  We are finding that this is a common misconception shared by many.  Unfortunately we do not get our food donated, the amount of food that is donated to the Food Outreach is only about 10%.  The other 90% the Outreach has to pay for.  Our food costs can run anywhere from $8,000 to $18,000 per month!!!  Many people think that Food Pantries get food donated from Local Food Banks, but unfortunately this is not the case.  We have to pay for over 95% of the food that we receive from the Food Bank for Westchester.  And that is only a portion of what we purchase.  The dairy we give to our clients we purchase from a local dairy and our baby formula and diabetic supplies and other special medical diet foods we purchase through the Wakefern Corporation (Shoprite Supermarkets).  When food is donated to us it is usually from individuals, from food drives that people do for us or from a Grocery Store that has food that is close to it's expiration date and it needs to be moved quickly or thrown out.  We deliver food to over 2000 individuals on a regular basis and we need to make use that we have enough inventory to pack over 3000 bags of food per month!

There are many ways that you can help us to meet the costs to feed so many of our neighbors who might otherwise live with food insecurity or even go hungry!!  Beside regular financial donations, we do various fundraising events throughout the year,  Our next event is our 4th Annual Walkathon.  Our Walkathon will be held this year at our new location of 404 Irvington Street, Pleasantville, NY on Saturday April 16th, with registration beginning at 10 AM.  We will be serving a light breakfast for all walkers and will have lunch ready when you return from the 2 mile walk.  We also have prize categories for those who bring in the highest sponsorships.  The categories are 8 - 12, 13- 18 and 19 and older.  Please visit our website at www.hillsidefoodoutreach.org to print a sponsorship form.  Thanks you and see you on April 16th!

Helping A Neighbor in Need

We got a very sad call from the Westchester County Department of Social Services right before Christmas of 2010, but we were able to turn it around.  It seems that there was an 82 year old gentleman, living in an affluent town in Westchester, who was arrested twice for shoplifting food form local grocery stores.  After the 2nd arrest, the local Police Department placed a call to the Westchester County Department of Social Services, Adult Protective Division to check into the situation and see what was going on in the elderly gentleman's life.

Upon visiting his home and investigating, the Social Worker found that the Senior Citizen was stealing food because he had nothing to eat.  He was also living in darkness as his electricity was turned off.  The senior was trying to hold onto his life long home and was just not making it.  It was extremely embarrassing to him to be living in these conditions after working so hard all his life.

Fortunately the Social Worker called the Hillside Food Outreach and we were able to deliver food to him that same afternoon.  He is now on our  delivery list and will be getting regular deliveries of groceries.  Once again, with the help of our supporters, we were able to make sure another neighbor was getting food and, in this case, not having to be arrested for stealing food so he had enough to eat.

HFO is Moving!!!

The Hillside Food Outreach is moving to a new location on Saturday April 2, 2001.  Our new location is 404 Irvington Street, Pleasantville, NY.  We are pleased that we have a new location with the same landlords Theodore Durst and Dee Ferriss.  They have been a blessing to the Hillside Food Outreach and we are so happy to be remaining with them.

Please be sure to stop by on Saturday April 16th and join us for both our Walkathon but also for our Open House.  We would also like to thank Mr. Nat Picco of Picco Construction who is donating all the materials and work needed to make our new space better suited for the HFO - The HFO is truly blessed to have such great friends!!
