Greetings!
Happy Thanksgiving! It has been a very busy summer/ fall for Treeswing and we have several updates to share. In June, Carly Kaufman joined Treeswing as our Program Director. She comes to us from the UW and has a great background in both education and health promotion. During the same month, I welcomed my second son, Quinn. Needless to say, things were pretty busy around here. This month, we also inducted two new board members, Michael McMurray and Sandra Reed. We are grateful to Sandra and Mike for their service and insight and look forward to working with them in the year to come.
This Fall, Treeswing embarked upon a new partnership with Playworks to bring 'recess reform' to four low income schools. Playworks is a non profit based in the Bay Area with a mission to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play. Read more about this exciting partnership in this newsletter.
This spring, Treeswing will host our first annual Farm to Table Fundraiser featuring a locally sourced multi course meal crafted by some of Seattle's best chefs. Local wineries and distilleries such as Oola, will be featured as diners learn about Treeswing's mission, programs and promising future. Please mark your calendars for this Farm to Table dinner event on Thursday, April 26 and stay tuned for more updates. If you or your place of business is interested in providing sponsorship for this event, please contact carly@treeswing.org.
With the holidays minutes away, please consider supporting Treeswing. Over half of our funding comes from supporters like you! We have made great strides this year in reaching more schools with our workshops and programs. We hope to reach even more in the coming year. NEW: Our new online donation portal allows you to dedicate your gift and send an ecard directly to that person. Thank you for your support and have a wonderful holiday season. Donate here

Healthy Schools Summit 2012 dates and theme announced
The Healthy Schools Summit prepares current and future school health champions to lead the healthy school movement in their local and regional communities. This year, we are excited to announce a partnership for a joint conference with OPSI's Institutional Education Department, serving those who educate and work with our state's incarcerated youth. This year's Summit will bring together the institutional, education and health communities to create and support healthy schools where all students can succeed.
The 2012 Summit will be held on May 17-18, 2012 at the Seattle Airport Marriott. The theme is addressing the needs of the whole child through rich and vibrant support systems. For many youth, their primary support will be their family, however for many youth, the best support system is a rich web of community support services. This year's conference will explore how to create stronger connections between schools, families, community organizations and other public agencies so that a student's social, emotional, physical and academic needs are met.

Treeswing partners with Playworks to make recess FUN again
"The new recess plan formulated by [playground supervisor] was fantastic this afternoon. I had recess duty and an assigned game. My students were all playing and having a great time, as well as being physically active. As I looked around the play yard, it looked like all the children were engaged in safe and fun play, and were being physically active." -First Grade Teacher, Roxhill Elementary School, Seattle
Treeswing is bringing Playworks Recess 360 to low income elementary schools in the Puget Sound area. Playworks Recess 360 is a year-long school based program designed to energize the recess yard in a structured and inclusive way that will engage all students. It is offered by the national non profit, Playworks.
Recess 360 addresses many schools' concerns that the chaos of recess results in fights, bullying and many children choosing not to participate. Play is essential to the physical, emotional and social development of every child and is also the single most effective strategy for increasing physical activity (and combating obesity) among children.
