Nutrition and Physical Activity Standards Workshop Follow Up
Thirty nutrition and physical activity experts came together on November 18th at the Tukwila Community Center for a workshop on Understanding and Applying National Standards for Nutrition and Physical Education. The workshop focused on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Nutrition Standards, NASBE Physical Education Standards and the Healthier US School Challenge, a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.
  • All workshop handouts are now posted at the King County Public Health Website under school nutrition or physical activity.
  • Physical Education National Guidelines can be found here.
  • Our last activity of the workshop was to addressing common barriers to improving school meals and physical education. The results of this activity are included HERE. Stay tuned for a follow-up conference call on this activity in the new year (for ALL districts can participate). We have also posted the material at our new King County Schools Yammer site for discussion. To join this discussion please email Carolyn for an invitation.
  • Our next workshop, in late January, will be focused on Engaging Stakeholders in your Healthy Schools Work (with an emphasis on engaging youth). We are scheduled for January 26th from 9-12, however we may be merged into the CPPW Coalition meeting on January 25. Updates will be coming in the new year.

What is happening in King County Schools?
Whenever I talk with school folks, they always ask me what other schools are doing to address recess before lunch or PE Waivers or <enter your favorite issue>.  As a part of our Communities Putting Prevention to Work in the schools, we want to help you (school folks) connect with others doing similar work. As a start, we have created a simple one page document highlighting the topics CPPW Schools are focusing on. Check it out and feel free to email me to add to or edit it (especially non-CPPW Schools, whom I would love to add to this document). In the coming months, we hope to come up with more tools to help all of you to connect with each other.
YAMMER Up
What is this yammer thing?
Simply put, Yammer is a way to communicate by bringing together groups inside a private and secure social network. It combines the best parts of a listserve and a messaging board. Inside Yammer, you can communicate easily with all subscribers (without tons of emails), post documents, ask for advice and share resources. Curious? Email Carolyn to sign up.
