We apologize for another email so soon on the heels of our last quarterly
Mile Posts newsletter. Newton Trails tries not to abuse the trust you've shown by letting us into your in box. But, we have news we needed to share.
When "No Rails to Trails" signs started showing up around Newton County last fall, the Board of Newton Trails took the stance not to engage in a sign campaign of our own. We felt then, as we do now, that signs are visual clutter on our roadways and do nothing to promote much-needed open, respectful dialog.
Since then, time has passed. And, unfortunately, little has happened to create a time or place for that dialog. And, it's grown increasingly clear too many local officials underestimate the broad public support that has long existed for a greenway trail system in Newton County.
Recently, many supporters asked us to reconsider our position. You told us you feel frustrated, overlooked, and undervalued by elected leaders of the community. You said the negativity of seeing only what people are against was wearing on you, and you wanted to be counted among those with a positive vision standing for something.
Fair enough. We heard you.
We've ordered a batch of what we feel to be a tasteful, respectful sign with a positive message. They should be available within a week. If you are interested in displaying a sign on your property, see the information above and to the left in this newsletter.
If you wish we had not taken this step, please know it was a difficult decision. We would have preferred our elected officials placed less stock in such symbols and put more credence in the extensive trail support documented in the county recreation, transportation, and comprehensive plans. The signs are not a demand or a plea for any specific project or action. They are simply a reminder. As the No Rails to Trails group has said: "Priorities First." And, a careful examination of our county plans shows that trails and greenways have been a priority for Newton County residents for a very long time.
