Dear Residents,
Happy May! We hope that you will have a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend. We would like to remind you that mosquitoes will also be out this weekend and looking for a holiday snack! Protect yourself by wearing repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, or IR3535. Be sure to apply repellent according to label instructions. You'll have to apply more frequently depending on the duration of your activity and how much you perspire. We'd like to encourage you to check the screens on your windows and doors to make sure that they are free from rips and tears. This will help prevent those tiny mosquitoes from entering your home! In this issue you'll find an Asian tiger mosquito update, a highlight on our tire recycling event, and a listing of upcoming events. Until next month, GLACVCD |
Eliminating the Asian Tiger Mosquito
| | An update on this invasive species Measuring just ¼ inch long, the Asian tiger mosquito may seem like a feeble foe. Do not be fooled, however, because this tiny insect belongs to the most dangerous classification of insects on earth. Mosquitoes kill millions of people worldwide each year - more than any other creature. This particular species of mosquitoes spreads diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, encephalitis, and canine heartworm. It is an aggressive daytime biter, and will ravenously attack unassuming victims at its first opportunity. After slowed activity during the winter, the Asian tiger mosquito was confirmed in the cities of South El Monte and El Monte earlier this month for the first time in 2012. Currently, districts are dealing with an Asian tiger mosquito reemergence, which was discovered in Los Angeles County in September 2011. A resident of the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District (SGVMVCD) complained about being bit by a mosquito during the day at a mobile home park in El Monte. Further investigation confirmed that the Asian tiger mosquito was present. Neighboring agencies and the California Department of Public Health were notified and surveillance and education measures began. Shortly after the initial discovery, GLACVCD also discovered the Asian tiger mosquito within its jurisdiction in the city of South El Monte. Over the next few weeks, both districts conducted extensive door-to-door campaigns to raise awareness and provide property inspections to residents. The battle against the Asian tiger mosquito can be won. It is tantamount that residents partner with vector control officials to help stop this species from establishing itself here in Southern California. Residents of Florida and Texas will attest that being bit during the day and having to spend time outdoors under mosquito nets is no fun. Call GLACVCD at (562) 944-9656 or submit a service request online at www.glacvcd.org if you see possible Asian tiger mosquitoes around your home or if you experience mosquito bites during the day. Together we can stop this invader and protect our way of life. Click here for full article |
