WRIGHT ON...WENDY MOGEL
By Rodger Wright, Headmaster
Author, Psychologist and amateur Rabbi, Dr. Wendy Mogel once responded to a client's assertion that her daughter was a certified genius by saying "don't worry, it will go away." Wendy Mogel in her two gloriously relevant books on parenting The Blessings of a Skinned Knee and The Blessings of a B Minus implores parents to discover their "unique and ordinary" child and stop trying to cure them of the disease called...growing up.
I had a blessing of my own just last week. I was fortunate enough to hear Wendy speak at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Annual Conference in Washington DC. In an hour that flew by, Wendy intertwined her own professional experience in her clinical practice in Los Angeles with fundamental Jewish teachings to give me, and I'm sure everyone there, more than a few "ah ha" moments. IN PURSUIT OF PASSION High Performance Learners Program Students in our High Performance Learners program resemble any other student in the hallways. But they lead a double life: they may spend their mornings in an Advanced Placement course and the afternoon at the barre or on the ice. They have hopes and dreams of playing in the NHL or winning at Wimbledon; swimming for gold at the Olympics or starring in a feature film. Through this specialized program at Collingwood their dreams do not have to wait until tomorrow, they can begin fulfilling them today. Read more...

SPECTACULAR SPEECHES WOW AUDIENCES
Not only have our students continuously impressed teachers, parents, judges and fellow students with their truly imaginative and magnificent speeches over the past few months; they have also found airtime on blogs such as this one by John Bell, former CEO of Jacobs Suchard (Kraft) who was a guest judge in Sara Bell's Grade 4 class. Mr. Bell's post entitled A Lesson from 9 Year-Olds provides an insightful look into his judging experience and lessons learned from it.
Click here for a video snapshot of the gold medal speeches (Grades 1-6) presented at the Public Speaking Celebration Assembly at Wentworth on February 23rd.
Congratulations to all brave souls who presented their speech in front of any audience. The high standard of the public speaking program at Collingwood continues to challenge students as young as six and helps grow the confidence of all students as they learn the importance of strong speaking skills.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION TEAM TAKES GOLD On Saturday March 5th, a group of grade 7 students competed at the Destination Imagination Regional Tournament at St. Georges. Team members include: Emily Kelsall, Rhys Mann, Nicole Hayashi and Jennifer Cheung. (Michael Graham is also on the team but was unable to attend the tournament this weekend.)
At the tournament, the team participated in an Instant Challenge, which was a surprise, and then performed their Team Challenge, which was an improv on a Mythology Mission for which they have done background research and preparation ahead of time. The team has been meeting after school on Monday's since January and one lunch hour a week to work on their team work, instant challenge skills and to prepare their team challenge.
It is certainly evident that all of their preparation paid off as the team won FIRST PLACE at the tournament for their category and have thereby qualified for the Provincial Tournament on April 16th. Congratulations to these savvy 7's and thank you to Sandra Mackeen for all her work with the group.

SUCCESSFUL ON STAGE
Madison Mailey has certainly been a force at the Chilliwack Lions Club Music and Dance Festival this past week. Accompanied by her grandfather on the piano, this Grade 9 student has had quite an impressive showing with notable results. She received first place with gold standing for her two folk songs, two musical theatre pieces, her art song, and her Canadian composition. It doesn't stop here; Madison was awarded best junior Canadian vocal performance and best performer for all junior folk and pop vocal classes. Congratulations Madison!
