Alvin Hobby Author, Missionary, Linguist and Amatuer Astronomer
Alvin Hobby, the author of Cycle of the Ages, was a native of Tennessee who was a missionary in Northern Rhodesia. As of 1961, when the book was published, he had been on the mission field 22 years and had taken only one furlough home. He had never seen a television set!
Mr. Hobby, his wife and 5 children ran the Namwianga Mission, a school with over 350 students. He became proficient in the Tonga language and translated seven books into the native language. In addition, he had worked for 22 years on the translation of the Bible into the Tonga dialect.
His special interest was astronomy. In 1958, after working for 5 years in his spare time, Mr. Hobby completed the construction of a ten-inch reflecting telescope which was perhaps the largest in Central Africa. He began work on this book in 1949, and consulted over 70 ministers and educators about this project and incorporated their ideas into the published version. The web pages are taken from the chart at the end of the book. The first part of the book discusses the cycles in nature and the various forms in which cycles appear. He concludes that the Creator has ordained that all things in the Heavens and the Earth run in cycles. All that we see, hear or feel is influenced by cycles from the electrons which orbit the atom to the stars which swirl around the galaxies.
