Winter Rains Training
During the Buddha's time, the Sangha gathered together during the months of monsoon to practice in community.  This year at DZC, we began our Winter Rains Training Period in September with our first Fall Day at the Temple and will continue through mid-December.

Dharma Class
Starting October 11th          (*October 4th class canceled*)

During the three months of training at Temple (ending in mid-December), we will be focusing on meditation, chanting and sutra/precept study on Thursday nights.

Our first text for this period will be the Diamond Sutra, (Sanskrit: Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sutra =  Diamond/VajraCutter Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, Vietnamese: Kim cương bát-nhã-ba-la-mật-đa kinh, or simply Kim cương kinh).
You may borrow a copy from us or read online here.

Sesshin/Retreats
RSVP required
October 12-14: Sesshin
December 7-9: Rohatsu Sesshin
Sesshin are silent meditation weekend retreats, lasting from
8 p.m. Friday through end of Service/lunch on Sunday.
Plan to stay at the temple overnight on Friday and Saturday.
(see below for details)
November 10: Day at the Temple
A special teaching Day at the Temple, beginning at 9 a.m.,
focusing on the Bodhisattva Precepts.  Laypeople will have the opportunity to formally be given these precepts during a twilight ceremony.

Practice Challenge
Whether or not you are able to attend class and retreats with us, participate in the training period by joining us in putting into practice these suggestions for cultivation:

- Meditate daily in front of your home shrine
Note: if you already practice, increase your daily meditation (for example, from 10 to 15 minutes,
from 20 to 30 minutes)
- Keep a vegetarian diet on the 15th and last day of
  the month.

- Read and study a sutra for 15 to 20 minutes a day.
- Recite the Heart Sutra daily at home.
- Bow, offer incense and fresh water at your home
  shrine daily.

- Recite the name of the Buddha, Namo Sakyamuni
Buddha, when rising in the morning and when going
  to bed at night.

- Recite a daily mala (108) of Om Mani Padme Hum
- Learn some of the gathas recited by the monks for
  daily activities.
A list of gathas may be found here.

Sesshin: October 12-14
RSVP please
Join us for a weekend of silent meditation: zazen (sitting), kinhin (walking). samu (working) & mindfulness throughout the day & night.  Formal meals & opportunities for dokusan (formal interview with Roshi).

Arrive early Friday evening to be ready to begin meditation at
8 p.m.  Stay at DZC Friday and Saturday nights. Sesshin ends Sunday after lunch.

Bring sleeping bag/bedding, towels & personal toiletries. Dress in comfortable, loose clothing; layers are a good choice as weather is unpredictable.  Although the day may be warm, even hot, nights may be cool. Bring work clothes, sturdy shoes, hat and gloves. Plan to leave the world (e.g. cell phones, watches, and so forth) outside the Zendo door.

Formal, ample, vegetarian meals provided.
Advise in advance of dietary restrictions and, unless medically necessary, please do not bring snacks or treats.
                                     ___________

DZC does not charge for retreats;
donations are most gratefully received.

Our new Anagarika
On September 8th, during our first Fall Day at the Temple retreat, Ananda Muktika (Jorge Infante) took Anagarika Precepts under Most Venerable Thích Ân Giáo Roshi.

The eight precepts of an Anagarika (one who has "Left Home") are taken by devout laypersons who wish to stay at Temple or are considering becoming a monk.

Ananda has been working on the upkeep and restoration of our centerpiece statue of Quan Te Am Botat.
We are grateful for his help, his practice and his companionship on the Path.

Congratulations, Ananda!

The Mala-making Workshop in August :

good fun and quite productive.
Although restringing, repairing and replacing became the focus,
several new malas came into being, too.
