?

There's a library shrinkage at DZC.

Please look to see if, perhaps, you may have books that need to be returned to the shelves so that others may read them.

Among the missing, multiple copies of:

Zen Flesh, Zen Bones

Three Pillars of Zen

Sutra of the 6th Patriarch

What the Buddha Taught

& various books on Dogen Zenji.

Thanks for checking!

Dōgen Teaching Retreat

May 13-15th:
focusing on Dōgen Zenji, the 13th century founder of the Japanese Sōtō Zen school, whose large body of written works on meditation and Buddhist practice are considered the very essence of Zen

This will be a silent, formal weekend retreat, alternating sessions of Dharma teaching with zazen (seated meditation), kinhin (walking meditation), and samu (working meditation).  Basic meditation instruction will be provided Friday evening. Daily chanting service, as well as opportunities for dokusan (formal  interviews with Roshi).

Arrive early Friday evening, so we are ready to begin at 8:00 p.m. with opening ceremony in the Dharma Hall.  Plan to stay at DZC on Friday and Saturday nights. The retreat ends on Sunday after our regular Service, which is followed by a potluck luncheon and music.

Please RSVP - ASAP

Dogen Retreat Information:

What to Bring: sleeping bag/bedding, towels and personal toiletries, loose comfortable clothes (including work clothes, hat and gloves).  Weather is variable in the desert and the pass can be quite windy, so layers are a good choice. Please do not bring alcohol, non-prescription drugs, reading material or electronic devices (cell phones may be left in your car, but please plan to concentrate on the retreat, rather than the wide, wide world).

Formal, ample vegetarian meals are provided

Cost: DZC does not charge for retreats.
That said, while our tensho is talented, inspired and thrifty,
-- we eat very well, thank you --
retreats do incur expenses ($25 per person for food at our March weekend Sesshin).  Donations are most gratefully received.
Please RSVP - ASAP

"All I teach is Loving Kindness."

                                                  --Thây Thích Minh Nhât

In the practice of Loving Kindness, we have a choice if we want to be a sword or a flower.   Master Hsing Yung taught,

"One kind word is like the fragrance of flowers in paradise. One harsh word is like a sword in hell."

mums

The first Precept teaches us not to take life, but can't we kill with words?

In our spiritual garden, we plant seeds of Loving Kindness.  However, speaking harsh words can be a razor that cuts the blooms, a sickle that shreds the blossoms.

Always remember that we carry with us the sword of harshness and our task is not to withdraw it from its scabbard.

In appreciation:  continuing kudos to all of those who have recently joined in with our Temple projects.  The garden was thoroughly weeded and planted, the garden shed was repainted, the restrooms and cabin have been textured and painted... and the restrooms have electricity!   Upcoming work delights: polishing the brass Buddha in the Zendo, sink installations, and the neverending weed adventure.  Photos and details will be on the website once our "webslave" catches her breath and gets her act together (abject apologies and deep bows).
