Irish Organic Salmon: Organic Practices
There is no doubt you've come into contact with some aspect of "Organic Food" during your last visit to your local market. In recent years, organic fruits, vegetables and other goods have become prominent on the shelves of supermarkets and in shopping carts. In fact, the organic food sector grew by 9.5 percent in 2011, reaching $31.5 billion in sales and representing 4.2 percent of all U.S. food sales.
While the USDA has not yet finalized the standard for organic seafood in the United States, in 1991, the EU established its first organic regulation, which was based on the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) formed in 1972. Moreover, the EU legally included seafood in their organic standards since 2007.
Although every European certification body may evaluate different criteria and the way in which the organic standards are administered, they all cover these fundamental principles of organic fish farming: (1) to maintain a healthy and sustainable aquatic ecosystem that protects the welfare of the farmed species, (2) the system must be free of inputs prohibited by the standard, such as herbicides or other agro-chemical pesticides and (3) must not be affected by or cause pollution to the environment.
